PAGE 1.

Today, we will explore ways that humans and animals use their sensory receptors.

prerequisite vocabulary

A cell that responds to an external stimulus is called a __________.

Open your Science 8 Workbook to the Sensory Inputs Notes. Review the types of receptors and inputs. You may find it helpful to reference these notes throughout today's assignment.

things we know:

Many parts of the body contain receptors

Receptors do not always work perfectly

A receptor is a cell that responds to an external stimulus

Some people wear glasses or hearing aids

These are tools to help correct sensory receptors and inputs

A stimulus is something that causes an organism to react

Page 4.

Sensory receptors are essential for an organism to understand its environment. Many animals have specific, unique senses that allow them to thrive in their habitat.

For example, a pig has 15,000 taste buds on its tongue! For reference, a human has 9,000. It is able to smell food six inches under the soil with its powerful, sensitive nose. It will eat just about anything it finds! This is a beneficial sensory receptor and allows pigs to survive in their environments.

Unfortunately, not all of their sensory receptors are as strong. Their vision is not as clear as humans and they are near-sighted.

page 5.

An elephant can make very low sounds that humans can't hear and it can hear other elephants up to 10 miles away! Match the stimulus, receptor, and type of input with the examples in your edio assignment!

Page 6.

A Peregrine Falcon is the fastest animal on Earth and its eyes are so powerful that it can spot prey from one mile away, even while flying!

RECEPTOR

TYPE OF INPUT

What is the sensory receptor used for your animal to receive that stimulus?Word Bank: vision, hearing, taste, smell, sensation (touch), balance

Choose any animal! In your answer below, state the animal you chose and ONE common stimulus that your animal encounters. Hint: what does your animal hear, see, touch, feel, smell, or taste?

What is the type of input to describe that sensory receptor?Word Bank: Electromagnetic, Mechanical, Chemical
