Planning for Guided Instruction

Check out the tips below to tailor your instruction time to ....

50

Minutes!

Tips for Success:
  • Tighten up transition times
  • Stick to a routine so your students know what is expected during guided
  • Building community- open your room up 10 min before or leave it open 10 min after class for learners to chat/socialize
  • Consider assigning a learner as your "tech person" to share links in the chat when learners join guided
  • Remember you do not have to copy and paste EVERYTHING from the edio lesson into your presentation for guided- you are the experts as to what your students need to know and how to get them there!
  • Keep in mind- the edio lessons are designed for our async learners

Things you need to hit in edio:

  • Key vocabulary- are you reading over these or providing an opportunity for learners to engage
  • Cover the content aligned with the standards and learning targets
  • Use your discretion as to which questions in edio you want to pull into your presentation-these can be used for "temperature checks" to gauge learner understanding and progress
  • Alot time for learner discourse and formative assessment throughout your instruction

Possible Time Spent on Different Chunks of Instruction:

  • Greeting, Objectives, Warm-up= 10 min
  • Vocab= 5-7 min
  • Direct instruction = (30 min) Every 3-4 slides of information should be followed with an opportunity for learner engagement (question, discussion, formative assessment, hands-on, etc.)
  • Wrap-up/Exit Ticket= (5 min) recap key points, where are you headed, check for understanding

Transforming the content in edio to guided:

  • Review the standards and learning targets to ensure you are including key content
  • Work backward from assessments and assignments/projects so your instruction aligns with what students need to know to be successful
  • It is OK to skip certain activities/resources in the edio lesson and remind students that it is there for them to circle back to on their own time.

Tips when doing Labs in Guided:

  • Add materials list to the background/home screen your learners view during guided several days prior to the lab due date.
  • Post materials list on your Announcements page, send in webmail day prior to lab.
  • You will ALWAYS have learners that are missing materials. Let them know if that is the case they can follow you completing the lab and utilize your data. Allow for some grace- it will get better as the year moves on.
