Definition
What is a variant?
There is no such thing as a catch-all variant: "special ed variant" "EL Variant" "Modified"
A variant is a version of an entire lesson, lesson component, or assessment in the edio RMS platform. It embeds support or adjusts the lesson to remove barriers for individual learner needs. Variants are for any learner who shows a need for support or adjustments, not just special education learners.

Productive Struggle Article
Do not remove the thought process. Learners learn by productive struggle.
Work Smarter, Not Harder
-Supports placed in the default lesson on a regular basis can suffice as long as they are "frequent accommodations" - ReadSpeaker - YouPicks: great option for supporting learners struggling to demonstrate learning in writing - Remember: we cannot simply translate lessons into learners' native language. We are legally required to teach in English

EL Levels
Supporting EL Learners
Variant supporting ELs can be the same as those used for learners with similar needs Must provide support in lessons AND assessments.
Supports Special Ed Learners
- The SDIs must drive the instruction being provided to learners.
- If it is in the IEP we must provide it
- There is no such thing as a "special ed variant all variants are created for individual learners.
- You may group learners together with similar needs
- Review the SOP for further information
Legally required for learners with IEPs, 504s, and our EL population. When supporting learners, ask yourself, "Can I defend what I put in place in court?"
Clarifications
All of this information and more is found in the MS OneNote
- Is a Variant needed?
- Teachers should review Scope and Sequences, Lesson, and Assessment before editing any content!
- *You may edit the default, but be warned that once it is edited, you cannot get it back!*
