Guide: Variants

Definition

What is a variant?

A variant is a version of an entire lesson, lesson component, or assessment in the edio RMS platform. It embeds support or adjusts the lesson to remove barriers for individual learner needs. Variants are for any learner who shows a need for support or adjustments, not just special education learners.

Naming Variants

There is no such thing as a catch-all variant: "special ed variant" "EL Variant" "Modified"

MS Specific SOP

Variant Vs. Differentiation

MS Specific SOP

Differentiation – intentional changes to support groups of learners, guided by the needs of the group, same objectives as everyone in that group.

Personalization – intentional changes to support individual learners, guided by the learners themselves, different objectives than the group of learners

Variants- add differentiation or personalization to the edio lesson for the async learner. Adjust your guided lesson to add differentiation and personalization in for the sync learner.

Keep in mind, "Could you defend what you put in place in court?"

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Share the Load

therE's no need to "Over-Variant" Courses

  • Work together in your PLC and/or Cohort to create variants
  • Make sure to follow naming procedures from the SOP
  • Create a system for sharing!

Learning Department supports to ensure accessibility.

-YouPick-Read Speaker -Videos, images, and infographics

  • Make sure to look through variants before placing learners in them if using them from another teacher
  • You can sort by variant if you do a gradebook export, make sure your variant names make sense to you by what the supports are given!

Do not remove the thought process. Learners learn by productive struggle.

Clarifications

-Supports placed in the default lesson on a regular basis can suffice as long as they are "frequent accommodations" - ReadSpeaker - YouPicks: great option for supporting learners struggling to demonstrate learning in writing - Remember: we cannot simply translate lessons into learners' native language. We are legally required to teach in English

Supporting EL Learners

Legally required for learners with IEPs, 504s, and our EL population. When supporting learners, ask yourself, "Can I defend what I put in place in court?"

Supports Special Ed Learners

MS Specific SOP

  • The SDIs must drive the instruction being provided to learners.
  • If it is in the IEP we must provide it
  • There is no such thing as a "special ed variant all variants are created for individual learners.
  • You may group learners together with similar needs
  • Review the SOP for further information

EL Levels

Variant supporting ELs can be the same as those used for learners with similar needs Must provide support in lessons AND assessments.

Variants should be named appropriately for the adjustments made in the lesson or assessment. For example, in this picture, it is clear that the second and third variants differ from the default in using reduced multiple choice, sentence starters, and notes. The second one also includes bolded keywords.

Consider the Content

Is a Variant needed?Teachers should review the Scope and Sequences, Lesson, and Assessment before editing any content! *You may edit the default, but be warned that once it is edited, you cannot get it back!*
