The Raft of the Medusa
The Raft of the Medusa is an oil painting made by a French, Romantic painterand lithographer named Theodore Gericault. It was originally titled,'Scene de Naufrage' meaning the Shipwreck Scene and was made in 1819. Thepainting is about a French Royal Navy warship which sailed around the coast of Mauritania, showing French Romanticism.
THE STORY The Raft of the Medusa is about a French government frigate which suferred a shipwreck in 1816. During the mishap they ran out of lifeboats, so 150 passengers were hastily put onto a raft that was left to float for 13 days, while the captain and the crew made of with the lifeboats, only 15 of them surrvived.ANNOTATIONSThe people's faces show that this is a gloomy day and people are not happy. The facial expressions of some of the men show that the painting was not set to be perfect, but unfortunate for them. They are pleading for help and do not want to be in this situation and the variety of colours chosen by the painter explains how he was feeling on the day he painted it. It looks as if it is a depressing and sorrowful morning for the people on the cramped boat. The protragonists' also are reaching out and looking into the distance where it is has lighter shades of colours, it looks as if the men were looking toward a brighter future.
