I used to live in Vietnam
I lived in the capital, Ha Noi
I used to travel to work by motorbike.
I used to travel to work by motorbike.
One day, I was going to work on my motorbike. It was raining, hard. I was wearing a poncho, so I couldn't see very well.
SUddenly, out of nowhere...
A car hit me! I hadn't seen it coming. The next thing I knew, I was on the floor, looking up at the sky, soaking wet.A crowd of people gathered around me. My clothes were wet, but I wasn't sure if it was blood or rain.I stood up, made sure I wasn't injured, and went to find the driver of the car. Out of nowhere, the police showed up!
WHat do you think happened next?
THey went to speak to the car driver!
II just stood there, feeling useless. I had never had an accident before, so I didn't know what to do. I waited, and waited, and waited. I was getting nervous....Then, the police finished talking to the car driver,
WHat do you think happened next?
THey went to speak to the bystanders!
I was waiting for them to talk to me!! They were speaking to a lady who sold banh mi by the side of the road. I saw her raise her hand, and point her finger at me. I was curious...I moved closer so I could hear. She was saying..."It was the westerner! He comes to my shop all the time and he's always driving dangerously. He drove into the car!"
I had never seen her before in my life
The old lady was lying through her teeth.I was absolutely fuming! Before I could think about escaping, the police walked over to me.
WHat do you think happened next?
They asked me to pay a fine!!
2,000,000 VND (approximately 250 EURO)They wanted me to pay it right there and then. What would you do?
I pretended not to speak Vietnamese!Plot twist: They spoke to me in English!!So... I pretended to be Spanish! They were very confused! The policeman talked to each other for a little while. One of them spoke to me. He said...
DINERO!!
Another plot twist!I looked in my pocket and pulled out some money. I smiled and gave it to the policeman. OK, OK, Dinero!I picked up my motorcycle and I drove away before theycould argue with me.
As for the Lying Banh Mi Lady....
I looked at her as I drove away, and I flipped the bird.
