Welcome to the Quiz ‘Healthy heat for cities’ Dive in and discover how your city can lead the way in decarbonising heating and cooling systems. Test your knowledge and get inspired to take action for a sustainable urban future!

Start

Question 1/6

Decarbonised heating and cooling systems improve cities' health and enable :

Improved air quality - Reducing fossil fuel use cuts air pollution, leading to better public health, fewer respiratory problems, and an enhanced quality of life. A stronger local economy - Investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency creates local jobs, reduces dependency on imported fuels, and supports economic growth. More resilient communities - Decarbonised systems make cities less vulnerable to energy price fluctuations and supply disruptions, strengthening community resilience.
Did you know that heating and cooling in Europe are responsible for roughly 150 000 deaths a year, just because of its PM2.5 emissions?

Question 2/6

Cities can detox heat on a large scale by massively shifting towards cleaner, more modern, efficient, and sustainable heating sources. Here’s how in 3 steps.

Question 3/6

What if we expanded district heating to cover 20% of the EU heat demand by 2030 (compared to 13% today)? We would save 24 billion cubic meters of gas demand! That is more than all the liquefied natural gas we imported from Russia in 2023 (18 billion cubic meters).

Question 4/6

Did you know? Solar heat is not the same as photovoltaic or concentrated solar power technologies, because while those provide energy, solar heat provides heating and cooling. However, solar heat and solar photovoltaic panels can share the same rooftop! A solar thermal system on an individual house provides enough hot water for 2.000 showers a year!

Question 5/6

Did you know ? To be successful in their heat detox, cities need a legal framework enabling them to enforce energy zoning and heat planning. The EU Tracker shows the current state of play for local heating and cooling plans for each EU country. However, it also underlines that most countries lack the appropriate regulatory and support frameworks for municipalities to start with this first and essential step.

Question 6/6

Did you know ? More than 11000 European signatories have joined the Covenant of Mayors since 2008, committing to climate action and many renewing their pledge to reach climate neutrality by 2050? Are you among them? If not, what are you waiting for? Join the EU Covenant of Mayors as a signatory!
