Illinois Hull Houses
The WIllis Tower (which was formerly called the Sears Tower) was completed in Chicago. This is important to Illinois history because it held the record of being the tallest building in the world for 25 years.
1973
The first Hull House was established in 1899. The purpose of Hull Houses are to help immigrants learn skills such as cooking and typing.
1899
Marquette and Joliet came to Illinois as the first Europeans from France. They traveled a lot on the river and befriended the Native American tribes. They claimed part of Illinois for France and had a good relationship with the native American tribes.
1673
The British took over Illinois after they won the French American War. After 20 years of being under British control, the land of Illinois became part of the United States and then became property of the Northwest Territory.
1763
Des Plaines becomes the founding town for the first McDonalds corporation, a restaurant now all over the world.
1955
1818
IIllinois population grew so rapidly people felt that they needed to have their own territory with their own governer. Illinois became the 21st state on December 3, 1818. Northwest Territory.
The Mormons decide to leave Illinois and go to Utah after their leader Joseph Smith was killed. The main reason they did this was so they could not be violated by people who did not practice Mormonism.
1844
The need for a new capital was needed after Illinois population grew evern more. Lincoln and 51 other lawmakers, as well as 4 ballots agreed to make Springfield the capital of Illinois.
1839
Over 20,000 building were destroyed in a fire that spread across Chicago. The cause of this tragedy is unknown, but it can be ruled out to a lantern or a pipe.
1871
Illinois growins population caused many tribes of Native Americans to become mad because there territory was being taken over. Chief Black Hawk and his tribe returned to Illinois to take their land back. They lost and had to go back to Iowa.
1832
The Civil War began not long after Lincoln's election. Over 260,000 soldiers from Illinois were deported to fight, and we also produced the most corn for people.
1861
Abraham Lincoln, a congressman becomes the 16th President of the United States, after he was voted for the most out of 4 other candidates.
