6.6C- Identify elements on the periodic table as metals, nonmetals, metalloids, and rare Earth elements based on their physical properties and importance to modern life
Rare Earth Metals
Metal
a class of substances characterized by high electrical and thermal conductivity as well as by malleability, ductility, and high reflectivity of light.
Conductivity
A property that describes if heat or electrical charges pass through the material easily
Ductile
A property that describes the ability to be drawn into long, thin wire
Luster
A property that describes having a shiny appearance or reflecting light
Malleable
A property that describes the ability to be easily hammered and shaped
Shiny
glassy surface; reflecting light easily
rare earth Metals
A group of special metals from underground that are difficult to extract and process
Metalloid
a chemical element that forms a simple substance having properties intermediate between those of a typical metal and a typical nonmetal
Semi-Conductor
a material that can conduct electricity in some circumstances and block it in others, depending on its temperature
Nonmetals
a chemical element that mostly lacks distinctive metallic properties. They range from colorless gases like hydrogen to shiny crystals like iodine
Brittle
a material property that describes how easily something breaks or snaps when stressed
Dull
Lacking brightness; not having a shiny surface
Insulator
a material that is a poor conductor of electricity or heat
Periodic Table
An arrangement of the elements showing the repeating pattern of their properties.
Element
A substance that contains one kind of atom and cannot be broken down into a simpler form
