What good does a cell phone in school do?

95% of US teenagers ages 13–17 have access to a smartphone. 97% of 11–17-year-olds use their phones during the school day. The median time spent on a phone during school is 43 minutes, but it can range from less than a minute to 6.5 hours.
Why are we so afraid, annoyed, can't trust students with the phones in class? Classroom teachers suggest that having phones in class is a huge distraction for students. Should they be allowed to bring them to class? That is questions. Is school safer and do students have more critical thinking without their phones being present? These questions are all being brought up for schools all across the Nation.
