The Argument Model
Can you find the claim, reasons, and support in these examples?
Start
Read the sample below and identify the writer's claim...what is her argument?
01

Use the pen in the upper right hand corner to underline the claim.

I believe that my school should consider implementing a mandatory policy of school uniforms. It may be surprising to hear support for this idea from a student, but I believe that such a policy would be in the best interest of all students and staff.

Underline the reason the writer provides for support in this body paragraph.

Use the pen in the upper right hand corner to underline the reason in this paragraph

Students who wear uniforms to school are less distracted by what they are wearing. Bare skin, offensive logos, saggy pants, hats, and other items that can become distractions cease to be an issue in an environment where uniforms are mandatory. No one has to feel self-conscious or stand out among his or her peers because of old or worn-out clothing. This leads to an inevitable increase in student self-esteem and allows students to focus more on their studies and less on what their peers think of them.

Underline the reason the writer provides for support in this body paragraph.

Use the pen in the upper right hand corner to underline the reason in this paragraph

A policy of mandatory school uniforms would be good for families as well as for students. Parents with fewer financial resources would be spared the burden of purchasing whole wardrobes for their children. Fighting and stress as families leave for work every day can be diminished by the reduced time it takes a student who wears a uniform to get ready. This results in a better start for students and allows them to be more productive and focused during the day.

Underline the writer's counterclaim in this paragraph

Use the pen in the upper right hand corner to underline the counterclaim in this paragraph

Some critics of school uniforms argue that uniforms prevent students from expressing their individuality, but common sense tells us that workers who are required to adhere to a dress code every day are no less creative or unique than they would be in casual garments. Students will have the opportunity to learn to adhere to rules and be given a sense of structure that will not preclude them from participating in the arts, sports, and other modes of self-expression.
