Important things about Zeca

Full Name

José Manuel Cerqueira Afonso dos Santos, he is also known by the family diminutive Zeca Afonso.

Dates

Born on August 2, 1929 and Died on February 23, 1987

Career

He lived in Mozambique between 1964 and 1967, accompanied by his two children and his partner, Zélia, and taught in Beira and Lourenço Marques. At this time, he began his political career, defending the ideals of independence, which earned him the attention of agents of the colonial government.

When he returned to Portugal

In 1967, he began to give explanations in order to survive. From that year onwards, he became a definitive symbol of democratic resistance. He maintained contacts with the League of Unity and Revolutionary Action and the Portuguese Communist Party, and although he remained independent of parties, he was arrested by the PIDE.

Musical Career

He continued to sing and took part in the 1st Encontro da Chanson Portugaise de Combat, in Paris, in 1969. He also recorded Cantares do Andarilho, receiving the Casa da Imprensa award for Best Album of the Year, and the award for Best Interpretation.

In 1971, he released Cantigas do Maio, which featured Grândola and Vila Morena, which he performed for the first time in a concert held on 10 May 1972 at the Burgo das Nações university residence. Zeca took part in several festivals, and a book was also published about him, and he released the LP Eu vou ser como a toupeira. In 1973, he sang at the 3rd Congress of the Democratic Opposition and recorded the album Venham mais Cinco.

A unique personality...

I don't know if this thing about remembering birth corresponds to a repeated content of dreams (...). Now that there is a persistent image, a very diffuse light (...). That's the impression I have. José Afonso

Zeca Afonso, with the political impact that his songs have gained, undoubtedly represents a very important part of Portuguese poetic culture.
