Hawaii Case Study

Overview In early August 2023, several wildfires, fuelled by winds from a hurricane offshore, decimated parts of the Hawaiian island of Maui. Especially hard hit was Lahaina on the northwest coast of Maui.

Impact:The family traveled home and did so without impacting the rescue and relief efforts that were ongoing on Maui. International SOS has the right contacts at the right time to successfully conduct complex missions and evacuations. For this case, relationships with the maritime provider were forged half a world away during evacuations in Africa earlier in 2023. It’s local knowledge and committed partners that make the difference.

Problem A request for help came to the Philadelphia Assistance Center from a senior leader at a US organisation who was travelling on Maui with his family. With hotels, roads and airports crowded and space needed for residents, he was seeking a way to leave the island while not hindering local rescue efforts. Solution International SOS experts determined that the best course of action was a maritime option. A tug boat was secured, and six passengers were picked up on a beach in a safe area. Seven hours later, they arrived in Honolulu for a flight to mainland US.

Case Study

Overview: A Food & Beverage company with 150 years’ presence in Mexico approached International SOS due to the impact of the medical and security situation around its local operations, and concerns among employees regarding traveling within the country. Problem:The medical and security challenges in Mexico. The deteriorating medical infrastructure and worsening security situation have resulted in increased concerns among the employees regarding their safety and wellbeing while traveling within the country and operating in local areas. The client approached us to aid and support their employees, recognising the need to address these challenges to maintain a positive work environment and enhance employee retention rates. Impact: Implementation of the Workforce Resilience Programme and consulting advisory has been well received by our client and they have expressed not only their satisfaction with our services , but also peace of mind in knowing that their employees are receiving the necessary support and training to manage potential risks effectively. Furthermore, the Workforce Resilience Programme has enabled them to reduce risk and increase productivity, in alignment with their global risk policy.

Case Study

Overview: International SOS coordinated a highly complex evacuation of four intensive care unit (ICU) patients, repatriating the individuals from La Réunion island to Paris. The operation was commissioned by the French Ministry of Health and carried out in collaboration with the SAMU, the emergency medical services in France, the Regional Health Agency, Air Austral and Aéroports de Paris. Problem: The situation was highly unique and even more complex, with all four patients in an unconscious and intubated-ventilated condition. Medical evacuations, particularly during the pandemic, are complex but this was even more so, requiring an even greater level of care and coordination. Solution The mission was staffed by the SAMU from Paris and La Réunion. The SAMU provided 5 ICU doctors, 5 ICU nurses, 7 emergency medical technician (EMTs) and 1 logistician. International SOS provided a flight nurse and a logistics expert. The International SOS Assistance Centre’s role was to interface with the various SAMUs, the airport and the aircraft, under supervision by the Health Ministry crisis centre, planning for and managing all requirements. Also, a critical aspect was to be able to quickly react in case of the aircraft diversion due to a technical incident, in order to prepare ground support for the patients. Due to the severity of the disease, advanced equipment was loaded and installed on the aircraft. This included portable blood analysers, ultrasound machine and 2 ECMO machines (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), as well as backup ventilators. This represented one ton of medical equipment, along with 9,500 litres of oxygen for each patient. Impact: This is the first time that so many ICU COVID-19 patients have been transported simultaneously on such a long-haul flight. We are very proud to be part of the team that was able to transport the patients safely.
