When studying history, sometimes it can be difficult to differentiate between a fact and opinion. A fact must be proveably true and supported by historical evidence! For example, we know that Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream Speech” on August 28, 1963. We know this because many people were there and witnessed this event. This event was documented in many ways, such as being recorded on video and reported in newspapers. The date in which this speech was given is a fact, with lots of historical evidence supporting it.

What is a historical fact?

Next

An opinion is simply a judgement a person forms about something. These statements are not proveably true because they are based on preference. An example would be, the American Revolution was the single most important event in world history. Some people may believe this to be true and have reasons why, but others may think another event is more important and have their own supporting information! Sometimes it can be tricky to tell fact from opinion.
