Outline

An informal essay outline uses graphic shapes like ovals, triangles, and squares to organize ideas.

There are different types of outlines used for writing. The outline you are using for this project is an informal essay outline.

PAragraph 1

Paragraph 1 Your introductory paragraph should have the following: the hook: grab your reader's attention; background information; and, the thesis or claim: the claim you are making.

PAragraph 2

Paragraph 2 The second paragraph is the support paragraph. There should be two reasons with supporting evidence. Your supporting evidence should: clarify details; define information; and prove the main idea.

PAragraph 3

Paragraph 3 The third paragraph is for your counterargument. This gives your reader or audience the knowledge of an idea that is opposite to your position. Be sure to use a transition word such as 'however' or 'although'. A transition word will signify why your position is more correct.

PAragraph 4

Paragraph 4 In the concluding paragraph, you will tie your ideas together. You will want to: restate the claim; give a brief summary; and give a final thought.
