At this point in time the fetus's organs and systems are fully developed. It will now begin altering in weight and length. At the begining of this process the fetus is about 4.75 inches long, and when this growth period has concluded the fetus will have grown around 3.5 inches, making it a full 8.25 inches in length.

2nd Trimester

The Turning Point

• The fetus's sex is able to be determined
• The placenta is fully developed

At the End of 12 Weeks

What Occurs

The zygote trvels down the fallopian tube and becomes a morula. After reaching the uterus, the morula becomes a blastocyst. The blastocyst then burrows into the uterine wall, this is the process of implantation.

Implantation

1st Trimester

Conception

Conception occurs when the sperm fertilizes the egg inside the fallopian tube to form a zygote.

• All major systems and organs begin to develop and function
• The external genital organs are developed
• Fingernails and toenails appear
• Eyelids are formed
• Fetal movement increases
• Arms and legs are fully formed
• The voice box begins to form in the trachea

At this point in time the fetus is still growing within the mothers womb. During the 3rd trimester the fetus will grow to the length of about 19 to 21 inches. The fetus's weight will also increase along with its length. At the end of this process the fetus stands at the wieght of 6 to 9 pounds. The fetus will also position itself head down in preparation for the exiting of the mother through the pelvis.
