The history

Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona, where two rivals families, the Montagues and Capulets, are enemies. Romeo and Juliet fall in love and marry in secret. After Romeo kills Tybalt, he is banished. To avoid marryng Paris, Juliet fakes her death with a potion. Romeo, unaware of the plan, believes she is truly dead and poisons himself. Juliet awakens, finds Romeo dead, and kills herself. Their deaths lead the families to reconcile.

The ballRomeo decides at his own risk to go to the Capulet ball. There he meets Juliet. They immediately fall in love. The dialogue shows how Shakespeare succeeds in exploiting and reshaping the poetic coventions of his time in order to make them more modern.

Love: The love between Romeo and Juliet is at the heart of the tragedy. Fate: The concept of fate is crucial to the story. Hatred and Rivalry: The feud between the Montagues and Capulets creates a backdrop of conflict that obstructs Romeo and Juliet's love.
