The Legend of SAINT MARTIN

SAINT MARTIN “He was walking along the road of San Martino, on a cold November day, when on the roadside he saw a poor man who had no shoes or cloak. Then the Saint took great pity on him, took off his cloak and gave him half of it. A few steps away another beggar stood on one side ragged and trembling. And to this second poor man he gave the other half of his cloak. God then sent a warm sun to reward the pious Martin. And every year its warmth returns, to remind us of its good heart. It is the gentle summer of San Martino, which lasts for 3 days and a little".

so they hung their socks on the fireplaces with the desire to be there the next day to see what there is inside.. The socks contain every type of sweet: chocolates, candies, dragees, biscuits... and also autumn fruits such as chestnuts, walnuts, almonds, pomegranates and apples... for the naughty boys, however, the sock is full of coal.

This legend says that in the night of the 1st of November the saul of dead people use to go to their families' house to leave a gift for them and they, before going to sleep, use to light candles in their memory and they use to leave the table set in such a way as to feed the relatives , From the children's point of view, this celebration represents an immense joy... the SOCK OF THE DEAD...

THE LEGEND OF PIZZOMUNNO E CRISTALDA

the most beautiful in the village: hair as blonde as the sun, skin the color of roses and eyes the color of the sea. Even the girl's heart was only for him. A feeling that is completely reciprocated, pure. The two could be seen cuddling and making love by the sea every evening. When Pizzomunno returned with his boat the young woman was already there waiting for him.An indissoluble love that aroused envy in the girls of the village... and beyond.

In ancient times the population of Vieste was mostly made up of fishermen, who lived in huts at the edge of the sea to facilitate the transport of their catch from their boats. Among these fishermen, the young Pizzomunno stood out for his strength, beauty and vigor. All the girls in the village had only their eyes and attention for him. Tall, charming, good-natured, he was not ensnared by the courtship of his peers. His heart was only for the sea, which he sailed every day with his boat, and for Cristalda,

The cursed lords

Once upon a time, in a village called Kombitsi, in an old house, forgotten by time, lived a villager. His family was destitute and they had no harvest that year which resulted in them having no food for the cold winter. So the villager, in order to survive, decides to borrow money from a stingy and bloodthirsty landowner who exploited the poor. As soon as he paid the debt, he asked the landowner for the agreement paper. He claimed that he did not have it with him and asked him to come back the other day to receive it. But the rich lord died the next day and his heirs found the agreement paper. So they threatened the villager to pay them even though he swore that the debt had already been repaid. The villager feared for his life and ran into the forest to hide. One rainy night he sees in the dark forest a horde of black-clad lords advancing with a strong and swift stride towards him... and what does he see? Back in line was the evil landowner. What harm did you do to me? the devastated villager told him. The lord promised him that he would release him from the evil if he worked for him. That's how it happened. Until the rooster crowed, the villager collected stones, until he filled a deep well assigned to him by the landowner. For 40 days and nights he tried in vain to fill it, since the well was bottomless. Suddenly, he sees an old donkey coming towards him. The animal approached him telling that the lord assigned him to work so as not to reveal to him that he had trapped him. Only if the lord's descendants made a merit on their father's grave could the curse be lifted. The villager had no other solution and risking his life he decided to turn to his sons who luckily believed him. It is said that if one walks in the forest of Kobitsi at night it is possible to hear the screams and footsteps of the cursed lords.

The legend of Argyro

Once upon a time, in a foggy landscape of northern Corfu, a rich landowner ruled with his daughters. The rich lord had built a lookout tower in Paleokastro to oversee the area from above in case of pirate raids. His favorite daughter was the noblewoman Argyro. The little princess loved carefree, sunny walks in the greenery and swimming in the crystal clear waters of the river, in the nearby village of Valanei. One hot afternoon as the little noblewoman was returning from her walk, she saw gray smoke rising from her family's tower. She immediately realized that all was lost. Being desperate she mounted a mule, blindfolded herself as well as the animal with her long scarf, and headed for the steep cliff. Some locals claim that her screams and the galloping of the mule can still be heard. Hence the current expression "the mule's leap".

How it s made...Baking bread and pies old-style..

The cheese pies were brushed with egg wash using a goose feather, before inserting them in the oven. When the oven is hot enough, the ashes are removed, the base of the oven is cleaned and the bread and pies are placed inside, using a special wooden shovel. When taken out of the oven, the bread and pies were covered with a clean cloth. These customs and traditions are kept, cherished and passed forward by many people in Romania.

In the old days, our grandmothers used to bake bread for the entire family. As there were many people in the family, the dough was made in a big wooden trough. The ingredients are basic ones, but the end result is tasty. Flour, yeast and a sprinkle of sugar, salt, warm water, make the dough for the bread or pies. Kneading the dough was a tiring activity, and the children would try to help either by holding the handles of the trough, or by adding water when needed. Meanwhile, the man of the house starts the fire in the oven, using twigs and wood-chops and then larger pieces if wood. Pies were made with different fillings: cheese, cabbage or plums. The plum pies were usually eaten as desert.
