What the painting portrays to the observer...

The painter has used Saturn's eyes to show that he is terrified. As his eyes are extremely wide open, it shows that Saturn is afraid and anxious of something that may happen.

Once again we are sure that Saturn is desperate and afraid of something as he is eating a child. From this, we can interpret that Saturn is power-hungry and afraid of being overthrown or is extremely paranoid about his power. We can also tell that he wants to take the child's metaphorical youth and power and feel the vitality of the child inside him.

In this part of the painting, the main focus is on Saturn's facial expression. On his face, he wears a stressed expression as he has faint creases, which the painter has managed to fit in, on his face, The way his eyebrows bend upwards in a scared expression also show that he is worried about something.

As Saturn has a sickly, feeble look and is extremely thin and pale, we can depict that Saturn is intimidated by the child and is agitated by the child's abilities.

The way that Saturn's hands curl around the infants body, that we cannot even see half of the babies body, is devastating as, it is showing us as the observers the difference between this grown, mighty man, and a miniscule, innocent baby and it symolises that the babies chance of survival is beyond hope.

The painting called "Saturn devouring one of his sons" is a work of art created by a Spanish artist called Francisco José de Goya between 1819 and 1823. His other art works include: The third of May 1808 (1814), The white dutchess (1795) and Witches' Sabbath (1798).This painting is based off the myth of Saturn, the King and ruler of the Titans, swallowing one of his sons. The tale goes that as Saturn had overthrown his father before him, his children were prophecied to be mightier than him and be the new rulers. Power-hungry Saturn got afraid that his children would be stronger than him and he got desperate to continue to rule. In Saturn's desperation, he thought that the idea of eating each of his children would make them unable to rule over him.
