metacognition

01

Definition

Metacognition means thinking about thinking....Analyze the way your mind processes information.

02

Application

Metacognition helps in college because you need to know why and how you think the way you do. Ask questions about why and how you think the way you do.

03

Practice

Ask yourself: What were your original thoughts about your topic? Have they changed? If so, how have your ideas changed? If not, how many sources have you read in your research?

04

Analyze

What does this tell you about the depth and impact of your research? Write and discuss.

Survey

Who's taking ENGL 1302? Where will you go to take it?

02. Solution

At the end of your notes handout, there's a Summary space. Reflect on what you just learned. Write a 2-3 sentence summary reflection. How will you use this knowledge?

Why should I fill out my course evaluations?

They help you

Filling out a course evaluation gives you an opportunity to reflect on your progress throughout the course. What have you learned? How far have you come? What parts of the class appealed to you? Which elements did not? Being thoughtful about your experience as a course comes to an end can help you make better decisions when selecting classes for a new quarter or when exploring options for a major.

What course evaluations are NOT:

They help your professor

- They are not a place to complain - Not a place to report on something your professor said or did Not a place to bring up important class-specific issues that should have been made prior to the end of the course. If it needs to be said, speak up before the evaluations. Speak to your professor or the department chair if you have a legitimate concern.

Thoughtful course evaluations help professors identify what is working in a particular course, and, perhaps even more importantly, what could use improvement. The more detailed you are in your written course evaluations (about lectures, readings, assignments, and exams), the more benefit you can contribute to the professor's future classes and subseequently, future students taking this class.
