The Permain Period (299 - 252 MYA)
Fun Facts About the Permian Period
End of an Eon
Supercontinent?
The Permian Period wraps up an iconic eon known as the paleozoic Eon. This Eon is very important to the history of our planet.
That's right. During this period, the supercontient Pangea was formed as a "result of large-scale amalgamation of continents and micro-continents"
Land organisms
Tectonic Movement
Marine life wasn't the only ecosystem flourishing in the Permian. Organisms such as stem-reptiles, or ancestral creatures that modern-day reptiles originate from, were present.
Permian History
Along with the creation of Pangea came other great creations. Panthalassa, which is a huge ocean basin, and the Appalachians were formed as well.
Permian rocks can be found on ALL modern-day continents worldwide. Talk about leaving your mark on history!
Climate
Animals such as the Archosaur, Edaphosauridae, and the Tangasaurus are among the various reptile species that flourished in this period, but unfortunately met their great demise during their extinction events.
The climate varied during the Permian period. It started with some initial glaciation, but got warmer over time. It was typically hot and dry, but had seasonal rotations. This period also experienced heavy precipitation more inland, which allowed rainforests to flourish in certain areas, but vast deserts in others
The Great Dying
During this catastrophic extinction event, significant percentages of life were wiped out. Some believe this was due to volcanic eruptions polluting the earth with extremely high levels of mercury. Marine and land animals would not been able to survive exposure to such excess mercury, which helps to explain the mass extinction. This is the most devastating extinction event in the past 600 million years.
Marine Organisms
Extinction Stats
Marine life was quite abundant during this period of time. Organisms such as brachiopods, gastropods, cephalopods, and crinoids were all present across the environment!
