Students in Tech
The team at Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) believes that all students should have access to on-the-job technical skills that they can take with them for college, career, and beyond. CMSD currently offers a paid summer internship that students are able to apply for. Accepted students will complete a capstone project and receive on the job experience at the district's IT Connect Center in supporting summer device inventory and preparation. The team at CMSD is currently working in collaboration with VILS coaches and community focus groups to develop both a sponsor and a student-facing district Student Tech Team Playbook, allowing all schools in the district to have access to the tools they need to support students in tech within their context.
"There are numerous reasons why I like the tech team! We learn many things about technology that helps us with our schoolwork! The coding website we do is very entertaining. The tech team gives us many chances to help us with our tech abilities." - 7th Grade Student, Douglas MacArthur Girls Leadership Academy, CMSD
The Genius Squad is the student technology team at Mater Academy in Florida. Led by the VILS technology coach, the Genius Squad teaches teachers how to use digital tools to enhance their learning in the classroom, and they help other students learn about their school devices and digital applications. The Genius Squad also allows students to develop skills in information technology and solve tech issues within a variety of applications.

Students at Adams-Young Middle School are getting early training in the specialized skill of IT as part of the student Tech Team. Comprised of seventh and eighth graders, these eager-to-learn techies-in-training serve as junior IT support for their peers, teachers, and school staff as they troubleshoot minor computer issues, perform audits, and much more. Students also opted to build their own Minecraft world and lead a gaming tournament for their peers in an effort to build community and intrapersonal skills.
Students as Tech Leaders
Kansas City Public Schools
Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts VILS coach Lindsay Murray and IT Support Victoria Martinez collaboratively work to develop and support the student tech team at Paseo in leading technology support in the building. Some of their recent work with students is outlined below. How are students at Paseo being empowered as leaders in technology?
- Paseo provides students with access to the REAL ticketing system, enabling them to support IT at Paseo. Students are actively involved, providing the school with real support and feedback.
- Teachers recognize these students as leaders due to the various ways they've assisted IT in classrooms.
- Additionally, we offer students opportunities to observe IT leadership in real-world settings (e.g., visiting the Federal Reserve last year), helping them envision this role as a viable future career.
- The team recently created a social media campaign encouraging all students to charge their iPads, and placed QR codes around the school to promote this initiative. Since the video, many students have inquired about prizes for keeping their iPads charged.
- Paseo utilizes intermittent positive reinforcement to motivate students to make the right choices, fostering good habits through increased awareness.
The team’s responsibilities include:
- Repairing Chromebooks
- Troubleshooting
- Device Maintenance Communication and support
Student Tech Team at Terry High
"The Terry High School Tech Team is a group of students that are tasked with solving the technological issues that arise around Terry High. As one of Terry’s various clubs, the team prides itself on problem solving, helping students, and representing the school in a positive manner. Each tech team member is equipped with a badge and has a group of teachers that they are responsible for assisting. When a non-tech team student has an issue with their Chromebook, they are to inform their teacher, who then asks their tech team advisor for advice. If the issue is dire enough, the student can also visit the library, but only during the time the team meets. In addition to this, the tech team members also hold group presentations [Free Tip Friday] for teachers to increase their literacy of educational programs. The Terry High School Tech Team has had a positive impact in its first year, providing more efficiency to faculty members, as well as the student body." - AA'Niyah Lewis, Terry HS student tech team member

Procedure
In order to keep devices well-maintained and do school-specific maintenance, the Hudson K-8 Tech Team completes device checks bi-weekly or monthly depending on school calendar. These device checks rely on specific conditions that are established at the beginning of the school year. The Hudson K-8 Tech Team is responsible for device checks with staff support.
