Everyone can experience A fear OF REJECTION
The amygdala is responsible for 'FEAR' response
HOWEVER

Amygdala
1
Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (or RSD) is a symptom of ADHD
2
RSD has an impact on how the brain processes stress
3
Activity in the Amygdala (the area responsible for emotions) Is increased
4
Increased stress response to 'percieved' and real threats
5
Individuals with RSD may 'feel' rejected by their peers and assume others view them negatively
6
RSD can be a life-long symptom, but its affects can be reduced
However, RSD is an extreme and persistent fear of rejection, of not belonging.it is so intense, the brain responds to PERCEIVED rejection the same way it responds to spiders, snakes and other real threats to life
Neurodivergence and RSD
- ADHD/ASD individuals have higher activation of the 'fear'' area and lower response in the 'logical thinking' area of the brain when exposed to different social scenarios.
- This means they are more likely to feel excluded and rejected by their peers, regardless of whether the interactions are positive or not
Reality: Individuals with ADHD and Autism experience a higher stress response to 'perceived' and real social rejection' than neurotypical people
