Pregnancy Timeline
Conception is when the sperm travels through the fallopian tubes and the egg becomes fertilized to become a zygote. A zygote is just a fertilized egg when a male gamete meets a female gamete (sex cell).
- After conception the fertilized egg implants into the uterus and a pregnancy begins.
- In implantation the cells continue to divide, some cells develop into your baby and others form the placenta
- The female begins to release hormones that tell their body a baby is growing inside their
- These hormones also signal the uterus to maintain its lining rather than shed it
- The blastocyst attaches to the lining of the uterus usually near the top, this process takes about 9-10 days
- The face and eyes begin to develop, and the heart begins to beat By the end of the 4th week, the baby will be slightly smaller than a grain of rice
- Tiny buds that eventually grow into arms and legs are forming
- Fingers, toes, and eyes are also forming in the second month of pregnancy
- The neural tube (brain, spinal cord, and other neural tissue of the central nervous system) is well formed
- The digestive tract and sensory organs begin to develop
- The baby's bones begin to get hard
- His/her skin is still thin and see-through but gets less see-through over time
- The baby's head makes up about half of it’s size.
- The baby's hands develop faster than it’s feet
- It moves around, but you may not be able to feel it move yet
- The baby is about 2 inches long and weighs about ½ an ounce.
- The baby’s organs are fully formed and continue to develop
- On an ultrasound, it may look like the baby's breathing and swallowing
- It’s nose and taste buds are developing
- The baby's skin starts to thicken, and hair follicles under her skin begin to grow
- The baby opens and closes their hands and brings them to their mouth.
- The baby’s heart starts pumping blood, kidneys make urine, and bones are growing strong
- The baby is about 5 inches long and weighs about 5 ounces
- The baby is starting to grow hair
- Their lungs are still developing and the baby has formed muscles
- You can feel the baby moving because it has muscles and is exercising them
- By week 18, you may be able to tell if the baby is a boy or girl
- The baby’s kicks and movements get stronger by week 19
- By the end of month 5, the baby is 10in long and weighs 1lb
- The baby’s lungs are fully formed and has a unique set of fingerprints
- The baby begins to hear and focus on sound like talking outside the uterus
- The baby can move its eyes under their eye lids, which are starting to open
- By the end of the sixth month, your baby is about 12 inches long and weighs about 2 pounds.
- Their skin is reddish in color, wrinkled, and veins are visible through the baby's translucent skin
- The mother will experience feeling kicks, body aches, and possibly swollen feet
- At month 7 your baby can cough and hiccup
- They are able to see light with their eyes continuing to develop
- They can hear sounds inside and outside of the womb
- At 7 months your baby is about the size of iceburg lettuce
- Your baby weighs roughly 2-4 pounds
- Your baby will have different sleep patterns due to physical development
- In month 8, the fetus continues to mature and develop reserves of body fat.
- The brain develops most rapidly during this time
- The fetus can see and hear most stimuli
- Most internal systems are well-developed, but the lungs may still be immature.
- The kicking is way more frequent
- The mother may feel tired and have a more difficult time breathing as their uterus grows upward
- Month 9 The baby’s lungs are almost fully developed with their reflexes continuing to become coordinated so they can do basic functions such as turning their head or blinking
- The baby should be 46-51cm long and weigh about 7 pounds when the baby is delivered
- Your baby should drop down to your pelvis with their head facing down when being delivered
You can briefly describe what the timeline of your presentation consists of and state the milestones achieved verbally so that no one falls asleep.
