Examine the parts of the brain that compose the limbic system

Learners can...

Identify how different parts of the brain respond to different emotions

Differentiate between human emotional responses and the emotional responses of other animals

BRAIN

CEREBRUM

NEUROBIOLOGIST

The main control center of an animal body

A scientist who studies the brain

The largest part of the brain that controls conscious functions

don't forget...

Take your notes! Page 28

A common emotional response for many animals is sometimes referred to as "fight or flight."

FIGHT OR FLIGHT!

Fear

Aggressive Response

Desire to Escape

Readiness to defend oneself

  • Human emotions are complex and often difficult to describe.
  • Specific- happy or angry with a person or situation
  • More general- feelings of joy or sadness
  • Can come and go over time

limbic system

hypothalamus

amygdala

  • Aggression center
  • Unconscious activities

thalamus

hypothalamus

amygdala

hippocampus

Strong activity caused by positve emotions

Stores memory that can trigger emotional reactions

Strong activity caused by negative emotions

Routes sensory input to the correct areas of the brain

Controls unconscious body functions and aids with fight or flight responses

Feelings such as fear, anxiety, and anger originate here

But wait, there's more!

Have you ever wondered if facial expressions have the same meaning in different parts of the world?

THALAMUS

Sensory Relay Station
  • Acts as a relay station for sensory signals
  • Everything you see, hear, taste, and touch move through the thalamus
  • Thalamus then moves those signals to the appropriate area of the brain
  • Part of the limbic system because senses play an important role in emotions
Basic Emotions

In the 1960s, a psychologist named Paul Ekman studied facial expressions and concluded that there were six basic emotions:

  • anger
  • fear
  • surprise
  • disgust
  • happiness
  • sadness

Now, scientists have proposed even more emotions- possibly even up to 27!

Cerebral Cortex

  • Scientists use this information to better understand how individual personalities appear in someone
  • Depending on which side is more active, people may be more outgoing and happy OR more timid and fearful
  • Prefrontal Cortex also affects higher level thinking (something that separates humans from other animals)

HYPOTHALAMUS

Unconscious Activities
  • Controls unconscious activities like body temperature, hunger, thirst, etc.
  • Impacts the fight or flight response within an organism
  • Body's smart control coordinating center
  • Keeps your body in a state of homeostasis

HIPPOCAMPUS

Helps form new memories
  • Converts short-term memory to long-term memory

EMOTION

A state of mind based on someone's circumstances, mood, or connection with others

  • Humans experience many different emotions- maybe even up to 27 emotions!

AMYGDALA

Aggression center
  • Feelings of anger, violence, fear, and anxiety origniate from the amygdala

LIMBIC SYSTEM

a set of structures in the brain that deal with emotions and memory

  • The limbic system controls emotions
