INDIRECT QUESTIONS

WHEN? In formal situations, both written or spoken WHY? Direct questions are rude when we talk to strangers, or if questions are personal; we use INDIRECT ones to soften our requests, to be more POLITE HOW?

Do you know what time the class starts? Do you mind me asking what you are doing? I was wondering why we need to do all this homework

The sentence has 2 parts: 1st: introduction (to soften) 2nd: request itself
