Important Facts

Common descent- He suggests that all species share a common ancestor connecting them to the tree of life.

Variation and Adaption - he emphasized that variation within a species is essential for evolution. some variations are advantageous in some enviornments allowing them to thrive

Natural Selection - He proposed that organisms with traits that help them survive and reproduce are more likely to pass those traits to the next generation.

Who was Darwin?

Darwin's Natural Selection

Darwin was a naturalist in 19th century. After having exhausted many career paths he found this one to be career best suited for him. He is best known for his theory of evolution through natural selection.

  • Variation in Traits - he discovered that indivduals within a species exhibit variations in traits like size and color and these can affect their chances of survival and reproduction.

  • Enviornmental Influence - he recognized that enviornmental factors like food availability and climate play a important role in determining which traits are beneficial leading to adaption overtime

  • Gradual Change- Darwin proposed that evolution is a slow gradual process where small changes accumulate over time eventually resulting in a new species.

  • Genetic Variation - just like other species humans have a variety of genetics. Natural Selection helps explain how variation can lead to physical features such as skin and color.
  • Adaption to Enviornments - humans have adapted to many enviornments. For example, people from sunnier aras have darker skin color to protect from UV radiation.
  • Evolutionary History - Natural Selection helps us trace the history of humans. It shows how we have common ancestors with other species and how our differences developed around the globe.

  • Fun Fact! The Peppered moth's adaption from dark to light colors due to pollution allowed for adaption was incredible!
