This was film Kubrick made before making The Shining, which also experimented with unconventional production techniques. To the farthest extent as they could, Kubrick and John Alcott exclusively shot without electric lighting, relying on natural lighting and candle light to illuminate shots. This decision informed what camera was used to shoot the movie and how the actors moved so that the camera would get the perfect shot. Alcott won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Barry Lyndon in part due his blend of past movie making techniques and modern filmmaking technology.
Garrett Brown invents the Steadicam. The Steadicam "was invented to give Hollywood filmmakers a mobile, camera-stabilizing option for smooth, dynamic movement that enabled the Steadicam operator to follow actors or create extended scenes without distracting shaking" (Adobe). The steadicam would be popularized by its use in movies such as Rocky and The Shining. Kubrick would use the steadicam to great effect in The Shining, giving many shots an eerie atmosphere.
The year we makecontact a 1984 American science fiction film written, produced, shot and directed by Peter Hyams. Serving as a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey and based on Arthur C. Clarke's 1982 sequel novel,
THE SHINING is released. "A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter, where a sinister presence influences the father into violence. At the same time, his psychic son sees horrifying forebodings from both the past and the future."
Pride and Prejudice, released in 2005, used the Steadicam in scenes such as The Bingleys' ball scene and when Darcy is walking away from the carriage. In the Gala scene, the steadicam moves swiftly around the room, allowing us to observe the scenery and people attending.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by Jonathan Demme, follows in the footsteps of films like The Shining (1980) by exploring psychological depth and redefining horror and thriller genres with a focus on complex characters, atmosphere, and the human mind. While Kubrick’s The Shining used isolation, madness, and the supernatural to create fear, The Silence of the Lambs delves into the psychology of crime and the uneasy relationship between hunter and prey.

Toy Story
Toy Story movies are known to have “easter eggs” which the director Lee Unkrich derived from his inspiration from The Shinning. From the carpet used in Sid(the bully)’s room to the iconic “Where’s Johnny” moment in The Shinning, the constant appearance of Rm 237, even the way in which we follow the toys around shows an effect similar to that of the steadicam.

THE SHINING
The Shining (1980), directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on Stephen King's 1977 novel, is a psychological horror film that has since become iconic in both the horror genre and film history. The story follows Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), an aspiring writer who becomes the winter caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel, bringing his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd) with him. As the hotel’s eerie influence begins to unravel Jack’s sanity, Danny, who possesses psychic abilities known as "the shining," experiences terrifying visions. Jack's descent into madness culminates in him turning violently against his family. Upon its release, The Shining received mixed reviews, with some critics finding it slow-paced or differing too much from King's novel. However, the film has since been re-evaluated and is now regarded as a masterpiece of psychological horror, admired for its atmospheric tension, unsettling imagery, and Nicholson’s chilling performance. Kubrick’s meticulous direction, including his use of long tracking shots and the oppressive setting of the Overlook Hotel, is widely studied. The film has influenced countless works in horror and beyond, becoming a cultural touchstone, while its themes of isolation, madness, and the supernatural continue to captivate audiences and critics alike.
