Case Study Details

Leilani is a 24-month-old girl born prematurely at 30 weeks with a cleft palate and diagnosed bilateral hearing loss. She spent 12 weeks in the NICU and underwent surgeries to correct the cleft palate at 11 months old. She had a gastrointestinal tube until she was 20 months old, after which she started eating orally. Leilani lives in a rural area with her mother, Brianna, and her grandmother, Noelani. Brianna has severe bilateral hearing loss and communicates primarily through text messages. Noelani is the primary financial supporter. Referral and Initial Contact: Leilani was referred to EI services by a new pediatrician due to concerns about her communication and attention. Keala, the EI care coordinator, initially had trouble contacting Brianna due to her hearing loss but eventually scheduled an intake meeting through text messaging. Intake Meeting and Evaluation: Keala conducted the intake meeting at Leilani's home. The evaluation team included Sharon, an Occupational Therapist, and Pauline, an Early Intervention Teacher specializing in deaf and hard-of-hearing children. They used the Battelle Developmental Inventory, Third Edition (BDI-3), to assess Leilani's development across five areas: communication, social-emotional, adaptive, motor, and cognitive skills.

How can play-based interventions be used to support Leilani’s cognitive and social development? What types of play activities would be most beneficial for her?

What strategies can be used to help Leilani manage her frustration and reduce tantrums, especially when she is unable to communicate effectively? How can the EI team support Brianna and Noelani in understanding and responding to Leilani’s behavioral cues??

Game instructions

1.

Choose your character.

2.

Each player rolls the die. The highest number starts and the game proceeds clockwise.

3.

You need to enter all the rooms of the house to uncover the clues. Inside each room, you have to answer a question. If you answer correctly, you get the clue; if you fail, you lose your turn. You can use your turn inside the room to use a secret passage if the room has one.

4.

This process is repeated with each player. You have to try to get all the clues.

5.

Once you have worked out the solution, click on the magnifying glass in the center of the board to solve the mystery and obtain the key that will allow you to escape the house. Feel free to work together!
