Next

Having a systematic patient assessment routine is important as it helps to make sure everything runs as smooth as possible. If something arises or the patient becomes unstable, using your routine prevents you from panicking and you can then quickly acknowledge and treat the issue.

In your own words, explain the importance of developing a systematic patient assessment routine, and list the 4 main phases of the patient assessment process

“Whats your name?” “Where are you right now?” “What year is it? / Who is the president?” “What happened?”

What is AVPU?

In your own words, describe the AVPU method and what it means when determining their Level of Consciousness

The AVPU method is used to determine how Alert / Aware the patient is. Using this helps us to determine their level of consciousness through various steps using the mnemonic and also helps to establish our next steps on how to treat and transport. It can also help us see if the patient is considered unresponsive and the severity of it. This does also help the EMS crew determine the priority of the patient.

List one of the immediate life threats that should be treated during the primary assessment and explain what will happen if the life threat is left untreated.

There are several various immediate life threats that would need to be handled before moving on any further into the primary assessment flow, for example one being major bleeding. Major bleeding is already serious but it can quickly lead to Hemorrhagic Shock and then death if left untreated.

Describe the method of forming a general impression and explain why forming a general impression of each patient is important

It is important to form a general impression of each patient so you have a baseline to start with. Once you have an impression and baseline established, you can begin treatment. With this, you can see whether the treatment is helping to stabilize the patient or make them more unstable. This also helps so you can provide information to the hospital on what interventions you have tried and what worked and didn't work when you give report that way they can try another method or intervention.
