Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in the west of Ireland, but the similarities end there. In school, Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life-changing begins. The two will not be able to really let go for years, despite various misunderstandings, relationships and family problems. The two characters will find themselves in the same college in Dublin, and both will have to deal with the changes of the other. The presence of each other will be essential for both of us to discover who we really are.

Normal People can be compared to Pride and Prejudice. Despite being set in different eras, both books explore complex dynamics of social class and romantic relationships, with protagonists who struggle to find a balance between their social environment and their personal feelings.
