Introduction

  • Kailani waiting for Hydration pellets

In the first part of the book explains how in the dystopian future there is no drinking water. When it rains they have to take shelter in underground bunkers because the rain is acidic and if they touched it they could get burned. Kailani the main character has to look after her brother who is very sick from dehydration. Keepers distribute water through hydration pellets. Kailani needs many hydration pellets to get Dylan well, but the Keepers give equal rations of pellets to each citizen. So she decides to cross the desert to "The Edge" where there are said to be waterfalls, rivers, lakes and vegetation. If she finds land Dylan will live otherwise he would be dead when she returns.

The story continues with Kailani's journey through the desert. After days of walking she sees the first type of vegetation, a bush, something she had never seen because no vegetation grew in the city due to acid rain, so she realizes that she is close to the legendary land. Once she arrives she cannot believe her eyes, she had never seen all that water in her life. Exhausted by the desert heat, she decides to take a bath in a lake when she meets a strange boy who lives on a tree, Murray. He shows Kailani the factory where the keepers create the hydration pellets, explaining to her that they can control the clouds and direct them into the factory, but the rain is not dangerous, they only lied to be rich by making citizens work in their factory and have the control of the city.
