WOULD YOU LIKE TO ENHANCE YOUR CURRENT COURSE WITH INTERACTIVE MATERIAL?READY TO START AN ACTIVE AND STIMULATING LEARNING EXPERIENCE?

The development of an online CPD course by academic staff at Durham University showcases how academic expertise can be harnessed to create high-quality, engaging, and accessible professional development opportunities. To create an engaging, inclusive, and accessible learner experience, the Developers team makes full use of Rise Articulate functionality, including various means of delivering knowledge and ensuring that alternative text, captions and transcripts are available for learners using assistive technology. Genially is used for custom visual elements to create interactive and accessible activities.

COURSE PLANNING

The Digital Learning Developers have been involved in creating various courses, such as a Biosciences Microscopy Best Practice Course: Human Tissue Guidance Course or a coming online Executive Master in Behavioural Science. To plan their courses, they utilize various tools such as Loop, Miro, Blackboard, Rise 360, and Genially. They meticulously plan the development process, keep in touch with academics and professors, and provide support in matters of content accessibility, design, and pedagogical supervision.

THINKING OF STARTING A NEW COURSE IN YOUR DEPARTMENT BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START?DO YOU HAVE AN EXISTING PROGRAM THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO REORGANISE?

PebblePad is “a portfolio and personal learning platform, designed to help learners, wherever they are learning (at study, work or play), develop, shape, and share their unique skills and attributes for success in today's world.”Once a workbook is created, it could easily be linked to from the module site. This tool has been used as part of weekly reflections, which are then referred to in students' summative assessments. This App allows them to record and upload information, be it textual or multimedia (video recordings etc), quickly and easily to their PebblePad asset library, straight from their phone.

THINKING OF ADDING A REFLECTION SECTION TO YOUR COURSE?WANTING TO EMPOWER STUDENTS WITH A COMPLETE PERSPECTIVE OF THEIR LEARNING JOURNEY?

Learning Glass allows for a more engaged, natural, relaxed, and interactive viewing experience. The instructor is recorded forward-facing, which allows for natural eye contact with the camera/students, gesturing and demonstrating what has been written on the glass. The team guided and supported the tutor through the process, from preview and trial of the Learning Glass to providing advice and recommendations on how to plan the session. Utilising the expertise of the Developers (who set up the studio, recorded the talk and edited the recordings) allowed the tutor to concentrate solely on delivering the material. Polished, edited videos were then returned for the tutor to review and embed in their Blackboard Learn Ultra Module using Panopto

DO YOU HAVE MEDIA MATERIAL AND YOU WOULD LIKE TO PUT A VIDEO TOGETHER?THINKING OF CREATING A VIDEO BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START?

One of our goals is to provide the teachers with the necessary tools to ensure that assessment transcends mere grades.Every marking methodology ought to serve the purpose of improving the learning process of the students and equipping them with the help needed.

ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING

We are committed to the development of content accessible for every member of our community. As a team, we offer unwavering advice to academics and professors to ensure every resource is inclusive, promoting a culture where diversity is celebrated

INCLUSIVE LEARNING DESIGN

Using advice about the cameras and editing software, shared by the Digital Learning Developers from DCAD, we set off to take images outside the entrances to each building, inside the main foyers and lecture theatres. Using Articulate Storyline we added interactions to these images, giving us the ability to share more information about elements in that scene.

The Professor was filmed in the DCAD studio (and later in the temporary studio as well) in front of a green screen, which was then ultra-keyed in post-production to allow layering underneath the relevant slide content to illustrate the narrative.Recordings were made using an HD DSLR camera and a lapel mic feeding video and audio onto one of the team’s Macbooks.Post-production editing was done largely using Adobe Premiere Pro, with DLD staff ultra-keying away the green screen and tucking Ric into a corner of the recording to allow the vast majority of the video background to be the associated slides, illustrating what was being taught.
