During the 19th century, Paris may have been the Capital of enlightenment, but it was nevertheless an unhealthy city. But all that changed thanks to one man, Baron Haussmann. Why was Paris renovated, how did it happen, and what were the consequences ? First, I'll introduce you to the main characters of this story, then I'll tell you the story of the renovation, and finally, I'll apprise you about the consequences of this renovation.

"The streets are narrow, winding and unhealthy; neither air or sunlight can penetrate them. Poverty, disease and infant mortality flourished. The construction of new arteries was intended to bring in air and light, as well as to facilitate riot control."
Georges Eugène Haussmann :- High-ranking official/Politician -Convinced by hygienic theories - Become prefect of the Seine thanks to Victor de Persigny (1rst minister of Napoléon III) who presented him to the emperor - Napoléon III entrusts him the renovation of Paris the 29 june 1853

"Paris is indeed the heart of France; let's put all our efforts into beautifying this great city and improving the lot of its inhabitants. Let's open up new streets, let's clean up the working-class neighbourhoods that lack air and daylight, and let the beneficial light of the sun penetrate our walls everywhere."
Napoléon III : - Born : 20 april 1808 (Paris) - 1st president of the 2nd Republic (1848-1852)/Last Emperor - Firstly president and after putsch (2 december 1852),=> emperor Napoléon III - Wants to make Paris a modern and attractive political capital in Europe
Annexation of municipalities bordering Paris, renovation or refurbishment of old buildings (Courthouse, Tuileries....).
History of the renovation
1- Napoleon III wanted to renovate Paris 2- His first minister presented him Haussmann 3- Haussmann began work in 1853 4- Haussmann and Louis-Napoléon regularly discussed the work (organisation...) 5- Haussmann carries out the work and aerates Paris 6- Haussmann finished the work in 1870
The renovation was heavily criticised for its cost, in particular (2 billion of gold franc)

Creation of sewers, new arteries, roads, streets and parks
Around 80,000 craftsmen were mobilised
Consequences
- Huge debt - The poor citizensare pushed out of the center of Paris - Accusation of destructuring the centres of protest
