Week 5Grace Carriaga-Benavides

"THE REAL WORK, the heart of the mentoring process, begins here, in the enabling growth phase," (Zachary & Fain, 2022, p. 167)

Enabling Growth

Support: Manage the Relationship

Challenge: Maintain Momentum

Vision: Encourage Movement

"Mentors encourage movement and momentum during (and after the completion of) the relationship by facilitating continuous reflection and assessing learning outcomes," (p. 183).

This work phase encompasses three main areas:

  1. Process management
  2. Momentum maintenance
  3. Movement promotion
It is important to keep the mentee engaged and the mentoring relationship on track (Zachary & Fain, 2022).

Encouraging Movement: Vision

I focus on:

  • asking questions
  • reformulating statements
  • summarizing
  • listening reflectively.

During our meetings, I prompt my mentee to share recent experiences and challenges. I use follow-up questions and restate his points to demonstrate active listening. When necessary, I seek clarification and offer feedback, ensuring a supportive and productive dialogue.

Managing your mentoring time:What my mentee expressed that he would like to do less of is reflecting together. He would rather do it on his own when he has more time to think and then talk about it the next time we meet. (Exercise 6.4)

The key is to challenge the mentee to move forward by challenging them. This means to get the mentee out of their comfort zone (Zachary & Fain, 2022).

Maintaining Momentum: Challenge

Exercise 6.2Identifying Learning Opportunities

Inside the OrganizationReinforce Learning:After our weekly PLC's. I check-in with my mentee to see if he has any questions or needs any further clarification to what was being told to us.

Support by creating a learning enviornment.

  • Listening
  • Providing structure
  • Expressing positive expectations
  • Sharing Yourself
  • Making it special

Table 6.1

I support my mentee by listening to his struggles with a colleague, sharing my own experiences, and offering practical advice to improve their working relationship. I emphasize that he is not alone in these challenges.
