Pepe the frog

  • Pepe the frog originally appeared in the 2005 webcomic Boy's Club by Matt Furie
  • The image was used since 2005 on MySpace and Gaia Online and then uploaded in 2008 on 4Chan
  • On 4Chan, the image got depicted in many variations and in 2012, the Sad Pepe variation entered Tumblr
  • In 2014, Pepe became more widespread, as many people begann using it
  • In 2015, some people begann using it for political reasons (2016: Donald Trump used it for his campaign)
  • In 2017, Furie symbollicaly killed Pepe in a comic strip, but the meme is still widely being used

The Troll Face

  • The Troll Face is a rage comic face drawn in 2008 by Carlos Ramirez using Microsoft Paint
  • He posted the image on his DeviantArt page, to mock the pointless nature of trolling
  • He also posted it on 4Chan, were it rapidly grew, and in 2009, the image was present in other forums such as Reddit, and eventually sites such as Facebook
  • In contrairy to the originall purpose, this meme is now often used by trolls themselves
  • It is considered by some as the "Father of memes"

The Nyan Cat

  • The Nyan Cat was originally drawn by Christopher Torres, in 2010, as two people in livestream chat said at the same time he should draw a poptart and a cat, so he drew an hybrid
  • In 2011, the drawning was turned into a GIF, and Torres umploaded it on YouTube with the name "Pop Tart Cat"
  • Three days later, Sara June uploaded the video with the japanese song nyanyanyanyanyanyanya as a background, under the name "Nyan Cat", which stayed the name of the meme
  • It became number five most viewed video of 2011
  • The video became really popular and got depicted in many different variations

Doge

  • The term "Doge" initially appeared in 2005 in the TV show Homestar Runner
  • The photo, which is today considered as the "original doge" was taken by the japanese woman Atsuko Sato, the dog being her dog Kabosu
  • The origin of the meme can be retraced back to the Tumblr "Shiba Confessions" in 2012, which becomes popular the same year; it consists of the photo of a Shiba Inu with his "Inner thoughts" written in Comis Sans MS on the image
  • In 2013, the meme blows up in popularity, and is posted massively on Reddit and 4Chan
  • In december 2013, the cryptomoney "dogecoin" got created, using the same source code as the Bitcoin but a lot of it got stolen the same month, so that it was never able to go up in value (the maximun was 0.000 59 $)

The GigaChad

  • The man on the the image is Ernest Khalimov a russian bodybuilder
  • Ernest is a part of an 2016 art project from the photograph Krista Sudmali, where the physiognomy of several models get modified by computer and posted on Instagram.
  • In 2017,Ernest's image gets posted on a Subreddit about bodybuilding, and then gets popularized on 4Chan two days later, where it gets named GigaChad
  • In 2021, the meme Average fan vs Average enjoyer makes the GigaChad get a new surge of popularity, notably on Twitter and YouTube
