A distenção entre estas duas expressões é bastante simples. "There are" é utilizado para se referir a duas ou mais coisas enquanto "there is" é utilizados apenas para se referir a uma única coisa. Por isso basta lembrar que " there are" é para o pulral e o "there is" para o singular

Os pronomes demonstrativos em inglês são utilizados para indicar algo ( pessoal, lugar ou objeto) e mostrar sua posição no espaço. Isso porque alguns deles são utilizados quando o falante está perto, e outros, quando estão longe. Diferente do português, os pronomes demonstrativos, não variam de género. Ou seja, a mesma palavra é usada no femenino e no masculino. No entanto.', há variações de número ( plural e singular)
