Shikoku

The smallest island, and located between Honshu and Kyushu. It's known for its temples and is famous for creating Japan's inner sea. Shikoku literally translates to ‘four provinces’ because of the four separate areas that make up the island. The climate on Shikoku is similar to that of Honshu. It’s a largely humid subtropical climate with the wettest months being June and July, and the coldest month being January. Shikoku and its islets cover an area of around 19,000 square kilometres across four prefectures. These regions are Ehime, Kagawa, Kochi, and Tokushima.

Kyushu

The third largest island, and the nearest to the Asian continent. It's known for its volcanoes and hot springs. Kyushu covers an area of almost 37,000 square kilometres. The climate on Kyushu is very similar to Honshu and Shikoku – it’s subtropical. Extensive forests that consist of Japan’s oldest cedar trees spread across this subtropical island. Most of the yakusugi trees (a nickname for the ancient trees derived from “Yakushima” and the Japanese word for cedar, “sugi”) are at least a thousand years old!

Hokkaido

The northernmost and the second largest island of Japan. It's known for its natural beauty, cooler climate, and vast plains. The capital of Hokkaido is Sapporo. With its distinct climate, it has cool summers and freezing winters. The island’s has a mountainous center, which spreads out to coastal plains.
