What is a Population Pyramid?
- A population pyramid is a graphical representation of a population's age and gender distribution
- It's shaped like a bar chart, but turned on its side
- Each bar represents a specific age group
- The left side typically shows males, the right side females
- The bottom shows younger ages, the top shows older ages

- An Expansive Pyramid represents a country that is growing
- Shaped like an actual pyramid
- The country has a high birth rate and high death rate
- Common in developing countries.
Part 2 - Expansive Pyramid
- A Stationary Pyramid represents a poulation that is stable - meaning it's not growing and not declining
- Evenly distributed population across age groups
- Occurs in newly-developed countries which have stable birth & death rates
Part 3 - Stationary Pyramid
- A Constrictive Pyramid represents a poulation that is declining
- Narrow base due to a decrease in babies being born
- Thick middle section
- Occurs in developed economies whose populations have low birth rates & long life expectancies.
