How does an OS work
Computer boot up
When a computer powers on, the booting process starts. This includes a series of initial diagnostics and the loading of essential components so the system can work.
Hardware boot up
The hardware makes a diagnostic called POST to make sure components like the memory and the graphics card work correctly before loading the operating system.
Location of the Operating System
Once the hardware completes initial diagnostics, the system looks into the storage unit the operating system that's going to manage the resources and inner working of the computer.
Operating System boot up
The operating system loads into the memory and starts managing system resources, controling communication between software and hardware.
System stops
When the system shuts down, the operating system closes all applications, saves the current system state and powers off the hardware components to avoid data loss.
System crashes
A critical failure of the operating system may occur due to hardware errors, bad software, or corrupt drivers. This causes a system crash and loss of functionality.
Booting problems
Various problems, such as hardware failures or corrupted system files, can prevent the operating system from starting properly, requiring repair or recovery.
