Evolution andNatural Selection

Expectations:

Have read the lesson and completed Notes. Are on a computer (not phone or tablet) participate appropriately for 1 hour. Be Mindful of what you say, type, and show on camera. The meeting and chat are being recorded. keep the chat related to what we are currently working on.

What does Natural Selection mean to you?

Allows for the evolution of a population to become better adapted for survival in a specific environment. Organisms with traits best suited for the environment will pass these traits to their offspring. Also referred to as "survival of the fittest"

Having Trouble?

Easy Point!

Let's Start by filling in the Name and Title section to earn your first point on this assignment!

Instructions:

What's this all about?

In this lab, we will explore an adaptation of moths that helps them survive best in a particular habitat. You will observe how a change in the environment impacts the population of light-colored and dark-colored moths.

Use the instructions above to fill in the Objective. What is the purpose of this lab? What is it trying to teach you? If you arent too sure, you may skip it and come back when the lab is complete!

Why do the colors matter?

How do you think the darkening of the tree bark impacted the survival rates of the light moths and dark moths?

Peppered moths can be two different colors depending on their genetic variation. The gene for each color is passed on from parent to offspring. Dark-colored moths blend in better on trees with dark bark. Light-colored moths blend in better on trees with light bark. How does this impact predators who are looking to eat moths?

During the Industrial Revolution, many factories were developed, causing environmental pollution. A moth-collecting scientist noticed that the color of moths impacted their ability to survive. Pollution from factories deposited soot onto nearby trees, darkening their appearance and changing the environment for its inhabitants.

Conclusion Q1

How will tree bark color impact the moth population?

The Hypothesis has been started for you! Select your prediction for each hypothesis from the drop-down options.

Variables

We just observed how different bark colors affect the survival rates of different colored moths.

To identify the Test Variable: Consider what changed in each trial that affected the outcome. What was different about each trial before we collected any data?

To identify the Outcome Variable, Consider what we measured in each trial. What data did we collect about the moths?

Questions 2 & 3

Question 2: Which color peppered moth had the highest rate of survival on the light bark?

(Dark Bark Data)

Question 3: Which color peppered moth had the highest rate of survival on the dark bark?

*Write a Complete Sentence*

*Write a Complete Sentence*

(Light Bark Data)

Question 4:

During the Industrial Revolution, explain what caused the population of light-colored peppered moths to decrease and the population of dark-colored peppered moths to increase over time. Be sure to include how the ability to survive and reproduce impacts the process of natural selection. Write your answer in complete sentences!

Need a Hint?

Question 5:

Quick! Look outside your window!Predict which color peppered moth would have a better chance of survival in your neighborhood. Explain why.

*Write a Complete Sentence and Explain your answer*

Hint: Think about which color would be most beneficial for moths in your area based on what color a majority of the trees are in your surroundings.

"Survival of the Fittest"

Individuals with traits that are well suited for their environment tend to be healthier, live longer, and produce more offspring. Individuals with traits that are less favorable may not survive, producing few if any offspring.

Natural Selection is when an organism has a beneficial trait that helps it survive and pass the beneficial trait to its offspring. Think about what moth trait was beneficial when the tree bark darkened, and how did this trait affect the moths ability to survive, reproduce, and pass the trait along to its offspring.

Conclusion Question 1: What caused the tree bark to become darker?

*Write in Complete Sentences*

During the Industrial Revolution, many factories were developed, causing environmental pollution. Pollution from factories deposited soot onto nearby trees, darkening their appearance.

Reproduction

Each new generation will show more favorable traits and fewer less desirable traits. Eventually, the desirable traits will become common in the population.

Variation

Each individual in a population has a unique combination of genes, which results in individuals with different traits.
