Funds of Knowledge

My schoolThe school I am working at is a Title 1 school. We are populated by mostly low-income families. We cater to special needs and a big ELL group. We have lots of different cultures throughout our hallways . Our families are Hispanic, Caucacasian, American Indian, and African American. Here are also many different religious and non-religious beliefs throughout our families. How does cultural values and backgrounds in communities effect learningWhether a students culture and community value education, is a big aspect of how learning will be affected. Students from cutures that strive for academic excellence are very successful in school. Other cultures like communiites that are low-socio-econimcal status may have low expectations because lack of resources to extend or enchance education through enrichment types of programs.

Funds of Knowledge Funds of Knowledge is represented by the existing knowledge that a student has from their life at home. Example of some of these funds of knowledge include knowing how to fix a car because dad is a mechanic or sewing because your mom handmakes all your clothes. Cultural ValuesCultural values are beliefes and values from your family and heritage. Eamples of cultural values can extend to relious beliefs and family traditions.. Funds of Knowledge Meet Cultural Values This connection comes from the culture and values that are learned from home. This knowlegdge spills over into learning and students build off of the knowledge that they carry from home. For example having mechanical or home-making skills.

Funds of Knowlegde effects on the classroom Studetns feel more connected and confident when their funds of knowledge are incorporated into learning in the classroom. Students and teachers build stronger connections. Students connect deeper with the materials being learned. A Christian Perstective; Somes schools do not allow for religious aspects with in the classroom or campus. This can have both postivie and negative effects on students depending on their beliefs and values. It is good practice to make sure you do not single out someone for their beliefs and not to provide activities that could be against a students religious beliefs.
