5 Tips for Effectively Using Note Cards
NUMBER
- Use one card for your introduction, one for each main point, and one for your conclusion
- Number the card order to stay organized
SIZE
- Small notecards: 3x5 or 4x6 -- NO BIGGER
- LARGE FONT: Make sure your notes are written in a large enough font so you can easily glance at them.
REMINDERS:
CONTENT
- Use mind joggers (key words & phrases) rather than full sentences to help avoid reading
- Include reminders of not only words for the speech, but also props, body language & gestures
MINIMALISM
- Avoid too much detail so you won't read the notes and lose eye contact with your audience.
- Use bullet points
Mistakes WILL happen; DON'T APOLOGIZE
- It draws attention to the mistake & makes the audience focus on it instead of the message
- It can make it seem like you're flustered & not fully prepared.
- The audience usually doesn't notice mistakes until you tell them.
Instead of apologizing...
- Briefly pause and quietly collect yourself
- Quickly correct yourself and move on
- Joke about the situation, but keep it brief
- Keep going
