This was the first session of the year! We went through the presentation with general information about the course. You can find it here.

Please, do the following activities in preparation for our next session:

2. Get the book, access Pearson Portal and become familiar with the materials.

3. Do the activities on this self-correcting worksheet.

Yesterday we discussed different aspects of learning a new language. You can check out the presentation here:

There's a lot of vocabulary. DON'T WORRY! You probably know a lot of words already and you don't need to learn everything at once.

  • GRAMMAR: Learn how to use infinitives and ing words after certain words. Click here.

We practised the present perfect simple and continuous with exercise 1A on page 18 and then with an oral exercise.

  • READING: book, pages 12 and 13, exercises 3B, 3C, 4A.
  • REVISION: Revise some of the content in unit 1 and learn something about Halloween with a breakout game!

We've nearly finished Unit 1! Do the following activities before next Monday:

We revised the expressions used for likes and dislikes and we practised using them in different contexts. Here's the presentation:

  • VOCABULARY: Learn vocabulary to talk about feelings and emotions. Click here.
  • REVISION: Do the revision exercises on page 18 (except exercise 1, which we already did. Don't forget to correct them with the key!
  • REVISION: Go to Pearson Portal and do some revision. Choose the aspect you need to revise in more depth in the online practice section. You can also give the interactive speaking practice a try.

  • MEDIATION: You have a new assignment: a written mediation. It's due on November 17th, no need to have it ready on Monday.

On Monday we practised adjectives to express feelings and emotions in a number of ways. Here's the presentation, if you want to try the activities again.

  • GRAMMAR: Revise basic concepts about how we express the future in English. Click here.

Class session November 20th

Preparation work for November 27th

On Monday we discussed virtual reality; we read the text on page 21 and did the vocabulary exercise on page 20.

  • GRAMMAR: we're going to continue working on future forms, focusing on ways to express future probability. Book, page 112: read the explanation (although you should know most of it already) and do exercises 1, 2 and 3. Don't forget to correct them with the key.

We revised the adjectives used to talk about technology and we practised them with a "Technology war". And the winner was... ELECTRICITY!

  • LINKERS: Learn how to use adverbials of concession. Read the explanation and do the exercises on page 132.

We also practised the future a bit, focusing on future probability. We did exercises 3A and 4C on page 22.

Preparation work for December 11th

On Monday we practised the vocabulary to describe lifestyles and we learned a few things about the life of... astronauts!

We also practised different expressions we can use to speculate, trying to avoid using "I think" all the time.

That's all for this week - it's a holiday, after all :)

Don't forget the for-and-against essay is due on the 14th.

And finally, surprise! - bad one - We did an exam-type reading comprehension exercise. It you weren't in class and would like to do it, get in touch - there's the possibility of doing it next Wednesday.

And remember on Monday we'll also do listening exam practice. It's great practice for you.

On Monday we corrected the exercises about countable/uncountable nouns and we played a game to practise them. Would you like to try it again?

  • REVIEW: Do some revision exercises on page 30: 2A, 3 and 4A.

Don't forget tomorrow (Thursday 14th) is the deadline for the writing exercise. SUBMISSIONS WILL BE CLOSED AT MIDNIGHT and you won't be able to hand it in after that.

And then we did a truly horrible listening comprehension practice. Don't panic! It was just practice, not the real thing!

Christmas Homework

Class session December 19th

In January we'll be starting a new unit from scratch, so this is not preparation work, just homework.

On Monday we just finished off unit 2, we played the end-of-lesson game and did a Xmas activity.

  • More work on QUANTIFIERS: apparently, quantifiers are not 100% clear yet. I've prepared more exercises. Click here.

  • FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE: learn how to use vague language. Page 39, exercises 3B, 4A, 4B. Page 117: read the explanation and do the exercises. You can find the audio file in Pearson Portal or just click here.

On Monday we talked about music and whether it is important in our lives or not. We watched the video and did the activities on pages 40-41 (not the grammar section).

And then we talked about TV series. We did the vocabulary exercise (2A) on page 38 and we also learned some adjectives we can use to describe TV series (and also movies or books). You'll find it in the presentation:

  • REVISION: revise some of the language in units 1, 2 and 3 with these tests. Click here.
  • WRITING: Remember there's a new writing assignment for January 30th. I'll try to correct it before your exam.

On Monday the 5th we'll do the writing and written mediation papers of the exam.

On Monday we talked about binge-watching and we did the activities on page 38. We discussed some of our viewing habits and revised the vocabulary we had used the previous week to talk about series and movies.

Exams are finally over! On Monday you had the opportunity to see your exams and we did some work on common mistakes.

On Monday we revised health vocabulary and we discussed things people do to feel better. We watched the vlog video (page 43), we read the texts on page 45 and did the exercises on page 44.

  • VOCABULARY: sport and exercise. Click here.
  • GRAMMAR: the passive voice. Full revision and maybe a couple of new things. Click here.

We also did a couple of activities to practise the future continuous and the future perfect: one is the speaking activity on page 46 and you can find the other one in the presentation below.

  • WRITTEN MEDIATION: health myths. Deadline for this one is March 14th.

On Monday we learned different expressions that we can use to express our opinion, agree and disagree. You have the info and exercises on pages 51 and 121.

  • LISTENING: sleep. Listen to part of a radio programme about sleeping and do the activities. Click here.

Then we talked about sleep. We learned some vocabulary on page 47 and talked about myths about sleeping. You can find that on page 49 (go to page 142 to see the answers.

  • GRAMMAR: the narrative tenses. Learn/revise how to use the simple past, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. Click here.

Last Monday we discussed work. We did some speaking activities and a listening. You'll find everything in this presentation:

  • FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE: learn to describe problems and suggest solutions. Do exercises 2B and C on page 63 (click here for the audio file), then go to page 124, read the reference and do the exercises.
  • EXTRA TOPIC: describing places. As we normally do on holidays, we're going to work on a topic we won't have time to deal with in class. This time, you're going to learn language to describe places. Click here.

We also read a short text giving advice on rules to have a successful videoconference. You'll find it on page 62. We also did the vocabulary exercise (1C)

  • WRITING: an informal article. Don't forget your writing assignment! Deadline is April 10th. Click here.

  • GRAMMAR: reported speech. Click here to see the activities.
  • PRONUNCIATION: review of pronunciation of -ed regular endings. Go to the blog, pronunciation section (click here) and scroll down to watch a video about the pronunciation of -ed endings. Then, log into Pearson portal, go to the ONLINE PRACTICE section for unit 6B and do the pronunciation exercises.

On Monday we practised giving advice (Unit 6C) with a couple of oral mediations. Remember, the idea is to stop saying "you have to" all the time. Click here to access the mediations.

The course is coming to a close! Sorry if work these days seems a bit chaotic, but we need to finish our syllabus and we only have 3 sessions left! That's why I'm picking activities that might seem a bit unconnected. This is your work for next week:

Then, we discussed hidden talents and we watched a short video.

  • VOCABULARY: IDIOMS - REGRETS. Page 84, read the text and do exercises B and C. I meant to do this in class but we did some grammar exercises instead.
  • READING: read the text on page 81 and do exercise2 on page 80. We're not doing the grammar in this unit, but the text is interesting and the same kind of exercise you'll get in the exam.

That served as an introduction for the listening exercise on page 83, with examples of the use of wish, if only and should have.

  • VOCABULARY: phrasal verbs explaining. Page 86, read the text and do exercise 1C.

Preparation work for May 13th

On Monday, we started by revising and practising structures with wish with an oral exercise.

  • VOCABULARY: phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs are tricky. We introduced the topic in class on Monday but, as promised, here are a few more activities that you can do.

Then, we talked about phrasal verbs and we saw different types of them. Have a look at the presentation:

  • GRAMMAR: conditional sentences. Click here to see the activities.

And finally we learned language to describe processes, but we also saw how we can use the same expressions to give advice. See the info and exercises on pages 87 and 131.

As I said in class, I'll be posting a new assignment soon. It will be a written mediation and you will have only a few days for it. It's also useful to do it in exam conditions.

On Monday we practised conditional sentences and we discussed world issues. You have all the information in the presentation (including the wheel we used to practise conditional sentences).

It's our last class. Sorry if the work seems a bit chaotic, but we need to finish a couple of things.

  • READING: read the text on pages 92/93 and note down advantages and disadvantages of co-living.
  • VOCABULARY: page 141, section 8A, exercises 1A and 1B.
  • FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE: How to develop an argument. Page 135: read the reference section and then do exercises 1, 2 and 3.

We also did activity 2 on page 96 (if the world were a village).
