Major Characteristics

Basic Andragogical Principles: - Self-concept - Learning from Experience - Readiness to Learn - Immediate Applications - Internally Motivated Dr. Kurt Surhat (2023)

How Learning Occurs

Learning occurs through: - Life experiences that shape learning styles. - Intrinsic motivation to learn is influenced by these life experiences. - Existing experience is shaped and learned. - Personal motivations are shaped by these experiences.Dr. Kurt Surhat (2023).

Role of Memory

Connectivism uses the concepts of ‘nodes’ and ‘links’ by drawing inspiration from network theory, framing them as integral elements in explaining the learning process in our digital era (Dr. Kurt Surhat, 2023).

Major Theorist Associated

George Siemens and Stephen Downes created Connectivism to capture the profound influence of technology in shaping our educational landscape (Dr. Kurt Surhat, 2023).

How Learning Occurs

Learning occurs through technology and the learners own research. Some tools that can be used in the classroom are: - Social Media - Gamification- SimulationsDr. Kurt Surhat (2023)

Lev Vygotsky was a Russian Psychologist and know for his role in Sociocultural theory. He believed that social interaction plays a critical role in children's learning. He also beleived that the learning process over time was influenced by the culture of the individual. In 1833, a German educator named Alexander Kapp proposed the idea of Andragogy. It took the work of Eduard C. Lindeman, an American educator, proposing andragogy to be the real method of adult learning, subscribing to learner-centric principles (Dr. Kurt Surhat, 2023). This led to the further development of adult education as we know it today.

How Learning Occurs

According to sociocultural theory, learning occurs through social, historical, and cultural interactions. It emphasizes that human learning is largely a social process, shaped by interactions with others who are more skilled (Kendra Cherry, 2023). The theory also highlights the role of the Zone of Proximal Development, where learning takes place with the guidance of more knowledgeable individuals.

Sociocultural Learning Theory

The Sociocultural theory stresses the role that social interaction plays in psychological development. It suggests that human learning is largely a social process, and that our cognitive functions are formed based on our interactions with those around us who are "more skilled."Kendra Cherry (July 12, 2024) What Is Sociocultural Theory? https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-sociocultural-theory-2795088#:~:text=Sociocultural%20theory%20stresses%20the%20role%20that%20social%20interaction,with%20those%20around%20us%20who%20are%20%22more%20skilled.%22

Connectivism

Connectivism is an innovative learning theory, which proposes that, in order to learn effectively, students should embrace the integration of thoughts, theories, and information that one experiences when using modern day technology (Dr. Kurt Surhat, 2023). In this day in age, through the internet, and AI powered tools to create and capture learning content. The new digital age has new digial tools for modern education on all fronts.

Role of Memory

The functional overlap between autobiographical memory and mental inference has been hypothesized to facilitate the integration of personal and interpersonal information (Spreng and Mar, 2012). This would explain the nature of strategy that we use use in our social environment through our social intractions and learning throgh social experience.

Role of Memory

In adult learning theory, memory plays a significant role. Instead of memorizing facts, adults rely on real-world experiences to initiate reflection, review, and abstract thinking (Dr. Kurt Surhat, 2023). Adults possess a growing toolbox of background knowledge from their experiences, which provides a valuable resource for new knowledge development.

Major Characteristics

- Decision making is itself a learning process- Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions- Learning is a process of connecting specialized nodes or information sources- Ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skillDr. Kurt Surhat (2023)

Major Characteristics

Conscious awareness - The individual is aware of these processes. Voluntary control - They can be deliberately used and controlled. Mediated - They involve the use of cultural tools or signs (like language). Social in origin - They develop through social interaction.Kendra Cherry (2023).

Adult Learning Theory

Adult learning theory, first known as Andragogy; is an approach to learning that is focused on adult learners. Andragogy is built on the premise that adults are more self-directed and motivated than children, and that they need to be given the opportunity to learn in ways that are relevant to their lives (Imed Bouchrika, 2024).
