Remove Top Layer of Vegetation

Use a shovel to remove the top layer of vegetation. If possible, compost, reuse or give away the vegetation you remove, rather than throwing it away.

If the ground is very hard, use a pick axe. You can also soften the soil ahead of time by watering the area thoroughly a day or two before the installation.

Create an overflow that is the lowest point in the rain garden. It needs to be high enough to allow the rain garden to fill and low enough that the water will go where you direct it.
