Ziad Al Achkar, Ph.D. focuses on the use of digital technologies in support of development, humanitarian, and peacebuilding action. Al Achkar serves as a Senior Specialist for KML on the ICT4D team at Catholic Relief Services. Al Achkar has a decade of applied research experience conducting and publishing articles, policy documents, and educational guides as well as workshops focused on the responsible use of digital technology and remote sensing. His Ph.D. dissertation “Humanitarian action in a digital world: how the pursuit of legibility shapes the humanitarian act” explores the impact of digitalization on humanitarian action and the challenges to the implementation of the localization agenda.Ziad was a co-founder of the Signal Program on Human Security and Technology at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative focused on building tools and responsible practices for the use of technology and digital services for the humanitarian, peacebuilding and development sectors. Ziad has worked with numerous organizations and initiatives focused on applying technology and remote sensing for conflict monitoring, peacebuilding and humanitarian response. Ziad often presents his work at public forums, and has taught courses on Global Conflict Analysis and Resolution as an adjunct faculty.

Princess Bazley-Bethea has an established 20+ years of passion for designing, implementing, and leading programs and projects, domestically and abroad. Her work integrates the principles of diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion and focuses on facilitating people-centered learning and capacity sharing. As Head of Global DEBI for Programs and Operations at CARE, Princess designed and led the organization’s strategic framework for diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion initiatives across 90 countries. As the former Director of DEI and the Together Project at InterAction, she was responsible for steering commitments to promote and enhance DEI for international development and humanitarian organizations worldwide. Princess is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer and has worked with several leading national social justice organizations such as the National Women’s Law Center and Delta Sigma Theta. She has an M.A. in Ethics, Peace, and Global Affairs from American University and a B.A. in Sociology from Winthrop University. Princess and her partner live in the Washington, D.C. metro area and are avid supporters of the local cultural arts.

Neil A. Levine joined CDA’s Board in 2018. Neil retired from federal service in 2017 after 30 years in the Executive Branch and on Capitol Hill. He taught Strategic Leadership at the National Defense University’s Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Policy and taught at American University School of International Service. While at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), he led the Center of Excellence for Democracy, Human Rights and Governance (2014-17) and the Office of Conflict Management and Mitigation (2008-13). He is now a certified professional coach with over 20 years of experience in advising individuals and groups on setting the conditions for success. Neil has a M.S. in National Security Strategy from the National War College (2008), a Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University (1986) and a B.A. from Earlham College (1983). In 2017, he received his Executive Coaching certification from the College of Executive Coaching.

Cory Schiff joined CDA in 2024. Drawn to its long history of localization and community-driven design, he relishes the opportunity to collaborate with the board and staff. He brings 15 years of experience as a researcher, implementer, and funder in this space.His previous work ranging from small grassroots settings to (I)NGOs, the United Nations, and philanthropy, has tackled various social challenges. He prioritizes partnered approaches to systemic change that are built together with diverse stakeholders and emphasize the involvement of communities and individuals with lived experience. He has worked with several teams to successfully scale and expand innovative, locally-driven solutions in different regional contexts.He has a Masters of Arts in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago and obtained his BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Fred Kama Kama is the Regional Director of the World Scout Bureau, Africa Regional Office. In this position, Fred assists National Scout Organizations to identify needs related to youth programs, adult resources, management, and institutional development. He has worked with Oxfam Novib, Peace Tree Network, American Friends Service Committee, the United Nations Development Programme, and performed field work as a Collaborative Learning Projects Consultant for CDA in Burundi, DRC, Kenya, and Rwanda. Fred is French-English bilingual and is currently completing a Ph.D. focusing on conflict transformation with the California Institute of Integral Studies.

Karen Lambert is a peacebuilder and restorative justice expert with over 20 years of experience in affecting social change and strengthening impact-oriented organizations who work to change the human toll of conflict. This includes direct frontline expertise in restorative justice practices in urban settings in the United States as well as a portfolio of international work at the humanitarian-development-peace nexus. Her organizational development experience includes directing non-profit development teams, strategic planning, and partnership building with governmental and non-governmental partners, philanthropies, civil society organizations, and policy makers. Karen is a certified trainer in restorative justice and she holds a certification in mediation from both the Harvard Mediation Program and the Center for Conflict Resolution (Chicago). She earned her BA from Miami University in Oxford, OH, and studied at the Miami University Dolibois Campus in Luxembourg. Karen received an MA in Intercultural Relations from Lesley University. Prior to her graduate work, Karen worked in the fields of marketing and organizational development. She lives with her family in Burlington, Vermont, where she is also a hands-on advocate in the field of refugee resettlement.

Sharon Flynn brings to our Board more than 20 years of experience designing and implementing sustainability strategies with global multi-nationals in the mining, oil and gas, construction and forestry sectors. These organisations include Rio Tinto, Bechtel, and GrupoNueva, where Sharon developed social performance and social impact management approaches. Sharon also brings considerable experience with the not for profit sector in community development, biodiversity conservation and peace-building with organizations including the One Earth Future Foundation, Conservation International and The Nature Conservancy, all dedicated to building local solutions. Sharon is currently the Executive Vice President and Head of External Affairs and Social Performance with OceanaGold. She holds a Master of International Relations and Management from the University of California, San Diego.

Barbara Jackson brings over thirty years of experience working in the humanitarian and development sectors in senior leadership roles with CARE USA, CARE International, and Trickle Up Inc. Barbara has managed country programs in seven different countries in the Americas, Africa, and South East Asia; she has held headquarters level positions including as CARE International’s Humanitarian Director overseeing CARE’s humanitarian efforts globally as well as VP Programs with Trickle Up responsible for Trickle Up’s programs in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. In her diverse roles, Barbara was responsible for leading strategy articulation, fundraising, driving diversity and equity, and monitoring program implementation according to international standards. Retiring from full time employment at the end of 2022, Barbara continues to be engaged with international and local development providing pro bono services for staff mentorship, program and strategy design, and identification of funding opportunities and collaboration.Barbara currently resides in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania with frequent travel and maintains a keen interest in promoting and strengthening local participation and engagement as well her dedication to addressing root causes of inequality and injustice. Barbara holds a Master’s Degree in Anthropology from the University of Missouri and an ABD from the University of Texas-Austin in International Health Education. Her research while at the University of Texas focused on identifying how indigenous women’s groups organized to acquire basic nutrition and health services in Lima, Peru; a topic that she has integrated into much of her work to foster local participation and decision-making in the diverse regions of the world where she has worked.

Ambreen Ben-Shmuel is a research fellow at the Harry S. Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace and a practitioner with nearly 20 years of experience working on peace and conflict resolution in the Israel/Palestine context. Ambreen's academic work examines dynamics at the nexus of sustainability and political conflict, exploring how social and structural factors impact organizational processes in these complex settings. In addition to her research, Ambreen has extensive experience managing, implementing, and fundraising for cross-border peace and advocacy initiatives. Her commitment to collaborative learning and knowledge exchange aligns closely with the mission of CDA to foster innovation and improve practices in conflict-affected contexts.

Jeannette Carneiro McLaughlin is a partner in the corporate department of Arent Fox, a full-service law firm based in Boston. She serves in the role of outside general counsel to numerous global companies, managing strategic advice on corporate planning, corporate governance, and negotiations. She represents companies in a broad range of industries, including software, digital media and entertainment, mobile, consumer internet, clean tech, medical device, and healthcare services related to work in the US, Latin America, Asia, Europe, and globally. Jeannette previously practiced law in London, where she specialized in international business law. She grew up in Kenya and holds BS and JD degrees from Northeastern University.

With a deep understanding of how effective communication is key to educating the public, raising awareness, and driving action, Kelly is dedicated to enhancing outreach efforts and ensuring that the organization’s mission reaches a wider audience. Her extensive career spans diverse companies, from start-ups to global enterprises, providing her with a broad spectrum of knowledge and versatile skill sets.Kelly possesses a keen ability to collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders, effectively working cross-functionally with diverse groups to implement communication campaigns that align across initiatives and achieve targeted goals. She has a passion for leveraging her expertise to create meaningful change and is committed to fostering community engagement and amplifying important messages.
