Soft Skill: Activity
Strengthening Resilience in High-Pressure Situations
This activity will develop resilience by reflecting on past challenges, identifying personal strengths, and planning strategies for future stressful situations.
Reflect on a Past Challenge (10 minutes)
In a document, answer the following questions:
- What was the situation?
- How did you feel during the situation?
- What actions did you take to address the challenge?
- What was the outcome?
- What did you learn about yourself from this experience?
Think about a time when you faced a significant challenge or stressful situation, either academically, personally, or professionally. As a paramedic, you often deal with high-pressure situations, so consider how this might translate to your own experiences, such as handling a difficult exam, managing a tight deadline, or navigating a personal crisis.
1
Identify Personal Strengths (5 minutes)
Write down these strengths and consider how they might be applied in future stressful situations, particularly those that could arise in a demanding career like paramedicine.
Based on your reflection, identify at least three personal strengths that helped you navigate the challenge. These could be qualities like determination, problem-solving skills, or the ability to remain calm under pressure.
2
Plan for Future Stressful Situations (10 minutes)
In your plan, include:
- The steps you would take to address the situation.
- How you would maintain composure and focus.
- How you would use your identified strengths to overcome the challenge.
Using the strengths you've identified, create a plan for how you would handle a hypothetical high-pressure scenario. For example, imagine being the first responder at a large accident scene or managing a sudden influx of assignments.
3
Reflect and Conclude (5 minutes)
- How did it feel to revisit a past challenge?
- Do you feel more confident in your ability to handle future stressful situations?
- How can you apply what you've learned about resilience to your academic and professional life?
Take a few minutes to reflect on the activity.
4
By completing this activity, you will have developed a deeper understanding of your capacity for resilience and gained practical strategies for managing stress in high-pressure situations. This exercise not only prepares you for potential challenges in a paramedic career but also strengthens your overall ability to thrive in demanding environments.

Lessons Learned
During my second year of university, I faced a particularly difficult challenge. I had three major exams scheduled within a span of two days, and I was also dealing with a personal issue at home that required a lot of my emotional energy. The pressure was overwhelming, and I felt anxious and stressed about being able to perform well on the exams while managing my personal situation.
I felt a mix of anxiety, fear, and self-doubt. The thought of failing the exams because I couldn’t focus on studying was constantly on my mind. I also felt guilty for not being able to give my full attention to my family issue.
To manage the situation, I first created a detailed study plan that broke down each subject into smaller, more manageable parts. I also reached out to my professors to explain my situation, and they provided some advice on how to focus my study efforts more effectively. Additionally, I made sure to take short breaks to clear my mind and to get some physical exercise, which helped reduce my stress levels.
Despite the challenges, I was able to perform well on all three exams. The study plan I created allowed me to focus on what was most important, and the support from my professors reassured me that I was on the right track. The personal situation at home eventually resolved itself, and I was able to balance both responsibilities without sacrificing one for the other.
I learned that I am capable of handling high-pressure situations when I have a clear plan and seek out support when needed. This experience also taught me the importance of taking care of my mental and physical health during stressful times.
Identify Personal Strengths
Based on my reflection, the three personal strengths that helped me navigate the challenge were:
- Problem-Solving Skills: I was able to create an effective study plan that helped me prioritise my time and focus on what was most important.
- Resilience: Despite the emotional toll of the situation at home, I maintained my commitment to my academic responsibilities and pushed through the stress.
- Seeking Support: I recognised when I needed help and reached out to my professors, which provided me with guidance and reassurance.

Outcome Goal
Imagine being a paramedic arriving at the scene of a large car accident with multiple injuries. There is chaos everywhere, and you need to quickly assess the situation, provide immediate care, and coordinate with other emergency services.
By following this plan, I aim to provide the best possible care to the injured while maintaining a calm and focused presence. This approach should help mitigate the chaos and ensure that everyone involved receives the help they need as quickly as possible.
Reflect and Conclude
Reflection:Revisiting a past challenge made me realise how much I’ve grown in my ability to handle stress. I feel more confident in my capacity to manage future stressful situations, especially by applying my strengths in problem-solving, resilience, and seeking support. This exercise has reinforced the importance of having a clear plan and staying composed under pressure.Summary:This activity has provided valuable insights into my resilience and how I can use it in my future career. The strategies I’ve developed will be crucial as I face high-pressure situations in both academic and professional settings. I now have a stronger sense of confidence in my ability to navigate challenges effectively.
