MAIN CHARACTERS

SETTING

George Orwell

Winston Smith Julia O'Brien Big Brother

Orwell was born in Motihari, Bihar, India, on 25 june 1903 to a lower-middle-class family of scottish origins. His father, of Anglo-Indian origins, was a civil servant in the British administration in India. In 1904 Orwell moved to United Kingdom with his mother Ida and his sister Marjorie Frances, taking up residence in Henley-on-thames, Oxfordshire; in 1917 he was admitted to Eton College, which he attended for four years, and where his teacher was Aldous Huxley (a great exponent of dystopian literature), whose works inspired 1984, his most famous novel. His great fame is due in particular to two novels, written towards the end of his life in the 1940s: the political allegory of Animal farm, and the dystopia of 1984, depicting a vivid totalitarian science fiction and political fantasy reality that gave rise to the adjective"Orwellian", now widely used to describe totalitarian mechanisms of thought control.

MORAL

THEMES PLOT

1984 isn't just a story of surveillance and control, it's also a profound critique of the manipulation of hatred and ignorance; Orwell shows us a world where 'Big Brother' uses fear and hatred towards an ever-changing enemy to mantain control over the population.
