Inventarono la scrittura, la ruota, l’arco in muratura e avevano molte conoscenze astronomiche; mentre per quanto riguarda l’architettura realizzarono la Ziqqurat.

Tra le opere più importanti vi è la Stele di Hammurabi, la costruzione del Muro di Babilonia e i giardini pensili.

Vengono raffigurati i primi rilievi con scene di caccia.

La monumentalità dell’architettura mesopotamica comprendeva l’uso delle costruzioni a terrazze, decorate con bassorilievi che spesso ritraevano rappresentazioni processionali

I tre tipi di scultura nell'Egitto erano: - Il basso rilievo: con martello e scalpello facevano emergere le figure dal fondo. - L'altorilievo: le figure emergono per metà. - Il tuttotondo: è un tipo di scultura a 360 gradi. Non sempre vengono scolpite del tutto, potremmo avere una scultura con la parte frontale evidente e quella posteriore in maniera più generica.

Pittura

La funzione della pittura egizia non è decorativa ma religiosa e veniva realizzata sui sarcofagi, nelle camere sepolcrali e all'interno dei templi. Le immagini rappresentavano soprattutto la vita quotidiana.

Architettura

Vennero create diverse piramidi e templi che venivano itulizzate come tombe per i regnanti delle prime dinastie.

L’arte scultorea si distinse per un vivace uso del colore, mentre per quanto riguarda la scultura è caratterizzata da ritratti con figure sovraffollate e distorte, ma con una profonda espressività.

In questo periodo vengono realizzati numerosi archi di trionfo, costruiti con lo scopo di celebrare le varie vittorie.

Le prime opere realizzate con la tecnica del mosaico, mentre riguardo all'architettura vennero costruiti l'Odeon e l'anfiteatro a Pompei.

Durante questo periodo erano alla ricerca della perfezione, dell’armonia e dell’equilibrio; cercavano la causa di tutte le cose, e così gli artisti iniziarono a rappresentare ciò che è perfetto, l’idea che sta dietro le forme.Si sviluppa inoltre una religione politeista che sarà grande fonte di ispirazione per l’arte greca, le divinità erano dodici (gli Olimpi), erano immortali e avevano sembianze umane.

L'ellenismo non è totalmente arte greca, ma una continuazione con delle differenze. L'arte ellenistica si presenta come cultura sproporzionata, con un tocco di spettacolarizzazione, cercando di stupire, e non cercare sempre la bellezza. In più può essere definita anche espressionistica, poiché è solita sottolineare i valori espressivi rappresentati nelle proprie opere.

Durante "l'età di Pericle" vi è l’epoca della scultura in “stile severo”, così chiamata per la serietà dei volti privi del sorriso tipico dell’età arcaica.Un nuovo tema nell’arte greca è che "lo sportivo incarna la bellezza ideale; il corpo giovane e atletico con i muscoli ben rilevati è l’ideale classico per eccellenza. L'arte classica si presenta come un'arte molto ordinata, con un'ideale di proporzione ed equilibrio.

La pittura etrusca si manifesta soprattutto sulle pareti delle tombe con scene di danze, caccia o banchetti funebri; sul soffitto, invece, vengono dipinti motivi vegetali che alludono al realismo dell’ambiente. Le figure sono bidimensionali, le tinte piatte, con una linea di contorno, e la tavolozza era limitata a rosso, bruno, azzurro e verde.

Nasce la pratica divinatoria degli arùspici, che leggevano nelle viscere animali il volere degli dei con modellini bronzei. Quest’età è caratterizzata dalla produzione di urne (canopi), con coperchio a forma di testa umana, forse riproducente il defunto.

La maggiore testimonianza dell’architettura etrusca è quella funeraria poichè credevano che il defunto continuasse a vivere nella tomba; dunque venivano riprodotti degli ambienti domestici con arredi e decorazioni. Tra le tipologie di tomba più diffuse c’è il tumulo, la tomba a cupola e la tomba a pozzetto.

La scultura venne concepita come subordinata all'architettura e assunse una funzione decorativa, soprattutto riguardo capitelli, finestre, portali e architravi. Spesso veniva usata in tema religioso, ma si ispirava anche a scene della vita quotidiana. Si distaccò dall'arte bizantina, mettendo in atto un ritorno alla volumetria dei corpi e delle forme.

L'edificio tipico romanico erano le "chiese", rifugio contro le tentazioni, luogo destinato alla preghiera. La copertura dello spazio avveniva mediante delle volte. In epoca romanica si definirono i principali modelli spaziali relativi al rapporto fra le navate di una chiesa.

Italia

In Italia, la forte frammentazione politica, ritarda l’evoluzione verso lo stile gotico. Ne consegue che gli edifici di questo periodo presentano ancora forme massicce per via della forte tradizione romanica.

Le sue costruzioni non rispettavano le proporzioni armoniche dell’arte classica. Introduce uno slancio verticale, una leggerezza e una complessità strutturale mai visti prima. Con la sua ricchezza ed eleganza, il Gotico diventa espressione dei monarchi e dei “signori”.

In realtà, non fu l’internazionalità a caratterizzare questo periodo, ma l’uniformità dello stile, la comunanza d’intenti dei pittori, l’amore collettivo per un certo linguaggio figurativo e, soprattutto, la sua applicazione a ogni campo produttivo.
