L.V. Beethoven is a revolutionary in music, and often being credited for moving the Classical period onto the more complex Romantic era. His highly unconventional compositions were not always well received during his lifetime however, his timeless music grace the grand stages of concert halls worldwide. Visit the city of Bonn and trace his life through its streets through a self-guided city walk. His birth house, Beethoven-Haus, is now an excellent museum to learn more about his private life and career, and his mother is buried in the city cemetery nearby.

German-British composer George Frideric Handel was born in Halle, in the same year as J.S Bach to a royal court physician. His father reportedly opposed to any musical education of his children. However, young Handel’s talent was discovered at the court of Duke Johann Adolf I, who recommended his father to allow Handel formal musical education. The rest they say, is history. Handel remains a widely loved composer of music and his Messiah is still celebrated and performed around the world today. Visit the award-winning exhibition in Handel House Halle, where he was born, and learn about Handel through paintings, musical instruments and documents.

Composer, pianist and conductor of the Romantic era, Brahms was known for his grand symphonies and songs. His most famous work though, was the Wiegenlied (Cradle Song), a simple song that became today’s most popular children’s lullaby worldwide. Encouraged by his father’s own musical career as a horn player, Brahms took up formal piano lessons at the age of seven. His success mostly came with recommendations and collaboration with friends and those who knew him, and despite having a great musical career, his life was mostly without drama. The Johannes-Brahms-Museum in Hamburg has an extensive collection of items from his life, and a place to listen to the entire compilation of his works on CD.

Year 2024 commemorates the 75th anniversary of the death of Richard Strauss, who was considered one of the great opera and symphonic poetic composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Already a prodigy of music, he had already composed more than 100 works by the time he left school. Through his father’s connections as Germany’s leading horn player, Strauss was introduced to the world of leading musicians, and was invited to conduct his first performance at the age of 20, which led him to hold conductor posts at leading symphonies around the country at the same time as he was composing music. Each year in the Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where he lived his final years, a festival day is held in his honour.

Born in Leipzig and grew up sharing a love of theatre and music with his stepfather, Richard Wagner was perhaps one of the more controversial composers of his time, who was both recognised for his great musical talent, but also his extreme left-wing views, and was exiled from Germany for twelve-years for his political engagements. Known for his dramatic operas, it is to no surprise that he was greatly inspired by Beethoven’s powerful symphonies. Later in life, he moved to Bayreuth and built the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, which remain the only place dedicated to performing only of Wagner’s works at the annual Bayreuth Festival. During non-festival times of the year, visitors can see the interior on a guided tour.
